My mom had a stroke and they gave her a diet. 2 Gram Low Sodium; Diet - Low-Fat, Low-Saturated-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Diets. I know the dash diet follows that. Is there any other diets that follow the 2 Gram Low Sodium; Diet - Low-Fat, Low-Saturated-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Diets? Please help. she is having high blood pressure, and needs to lose weight.
  • I think thats pretty much vegetables and lean proteins, fish, chicken. Mrs. Dash will be a huge help. The hardest part os addong flavor without the salt. You can do cauliflour casseroles. Unfortunately I dont know any specific sites. Can you request the doc to gove a referral for a nutritionist?
  • Take a look st the Dash Diet. It has easy recipes and menus and all the info you need.
  • Which type is your mother? I mean protein, carb or mixed?
  • Go to http://www.ucsfhealth.org/education/...ated_fat_diet/ and look around. You'll find various information from guidelines, to alternative ingredients. You can also find sample menus and a lot more information by just googling.

Other than that, all you can do for low sodium is avoid adding salt to food (it sucks but she'll get used to it, you can flavor foods with herbs and other spices) and look at the sodium content on packages, for low fat/cholesterol, she'll have to avoid/limit animal foods (poultry and fish are better) and packaged foods, eat healthy oils (olive oil is the best) and try to be as active as she can. If she can go walking every day (even just around the house) it'll help her cholesterol, her weight and her overall health, both physical and mental.
  • I'd suggest if you are struggling that you and your mother make an appointment with a dietician. They can help guide you beyond the basic recommendations. Also google DASH diet recipes.
  • The Ornish reversal diets for cardiovascular disease might be a good starting point. Just search for Dr. Dean Ornish. Here is a link I found to a few sample menus: http://www.pmri.org/SampleMenus/
  • A window, herb garden, or get a grow light, and it takes a bit of trial and error, but growing your own, is amazing!

Lots of herbs can be grown, in a window, or with a grow light. Oregano, sage, rosemary, basil, cilantro, and so on.

Plus, stuff you can buy, onion, garlic, celery, peppers. Other things, smoked paprika rocks!

If you are in or near a large urban area, look for "whole foods" stores, or organic stores. Check out farmers markets.

There are tons of options, unfortunately, many people do not have the knowledge, to realize, how many options there really are available.
  • I use loads of garlic powder & love it. I usually buy it at Trader Joes--really like theirs. Like shcirerf said, fresh herbs add loads of flavor. Best wishes to your mother. Don't forget to take care of you!
  • what about Ideal Protein? would that diet be ok for 2 Gram Low Sodium Diet, Low-Fat, Low-Saturated-Fat, Low-Cholesterol?
  • I really need help.
