Haven't been around in a while because I've been stressed with grad school/life in general. Anyway, I decided to splurge and go get a pedicure today - a deluxe pedicure, to relax and get away from life for a little while but had such a bad experience.

The guy at the nail salon kept trying to talk to me even though I brought in my headphones, which I thought was a clear indication that I didn't want to talk. The massage was rough and uncomfortable and the guy had a perverted vibe about him. Aside from that, he decided to announce loudly that I had a fungus on my toe in order to sell his products. I told him it wasn't a fungus and that my nail was just a bit white from using dark polish too much (which some of you ladies may be familiar with). He kept insisting it was a fungus and tried to sell me medication for it and I told him that my mom owns a nail salon and I'll just ask her and he proceeded to say "she may not know". Like excuse you? Are you a podiatrist? Side note, I used to be a nail tech, so I'm quite familiar with the symptoms of a fungus and know when I should be concerned if there's a problem. Even then, I would never be so quick to tell a customer they had a fungus unless it was very obvious because I'm not a doctor - I usually just tell them to go to the doctor. He then proceeded to paint my toenails, but before doing so, tried to get me to change to a lighter nail polish because the color was dark and hard to put on. OMFG. I wanted to strangle him at this point and I'm just like NO, I want to keep this color. Tried to sell his products again before I paid. I was so done.

I'm so mad still. I came there to relax and not stress out, but it did nothing but piss me off even more. I don't like confrontation or starting drama so I decided to brush it off as an experience and won't return (if I do, I will request for someone else.)


What do you ladies/guys do to relax and "get away from life"? Def in need of it these days...

Side note, I'm going to the gym again. So I'm feeling a bit better about that at least!

When I want to relax and get away from it, I always go to the beaches here or the trails in the old-growth forests....Beaches here are wild, cold, rocky - not like you'd picture a warm, sandy beach....And the trails, you can just immerse yourself in the deep, ancient silence!! There's still massive trees laying on the ground that were blown down by a windstorm in 1883....And just to go listen to the waves, watch the sunset or the seagulls, and walk into that silence and spend some time there....it just restores something in me.

When I want to relax I read, or crochet, or watch a movie.

That's why I do my own Nails & Just hide From everyone~!!!~ That's a relaxing day ~ some time to yourself!!!

That's what Yelp is for! Seriously, if I ever have a bad experience at a nail salon, restaurant, tailors, whatever I yelp about it. I feel like it's my duty to warn people about what they may experience there. I tend to yelp about bad things but also very good experiences as well.

For total relaxation I like to go for a massage. Or spend the day at the mall shopping, lunching and trying on shoes

The yelp reviews were amazing for that salon so I decided to give it a try. I don't write yelp reviews but I was pretty tempted to write one. Didn't want to taint the place though because the other workers seemed pretty cool except for this guy. I will go back, but will be sure to ask for someone else. The know it all attitude from him really put me over the edge. I'm a usually calm and collected person, but this guy really irked me for some reason. Feel like going back there just to give him a piece of my mind. Don't mistake my politeness as being timid, because I am definitely not.

I go for pedicures at a Vietnamese owned spa and there's barely any English spoken which is fine with me. I don't like to make small talk since I have to do it all day long being a hair stylist. However, there are those that do and since they can't carry on about their 99 problems with the techs, sometimes I'm stuck next to a rude a-hole that is loudly yapping on their cell the entire time. These are the kind of people that tempt me to go to jail.

Totally unrelated to the OP but when I worked chair side in Dental I was amazed how people were trying to text WHILE being drilled on. Put. The. Cell. Down.

LOL, I'm Vietnamese, but my speaking proficiency is limited - still, they tried to talk to me even with my headphones in. I used to go to a Hispanic nail salon and they don't talk to me at all, but were very nice people. It's just a longer drive so I decided to go to one that was 2 mins away. I don't like small talk either, it's tiring and meaningless. Getting a pedicure to me means just enjoying some quiet down time, I don't even really open up to close friends let alone random people that are working on my hair/nails! I guess I'm just an introvert, but when I worked as a nail tech in the past, I could tell apart the talkative ones versus the people that just wanted to enjoy their time at the salon and respected that.

You can't have been the only customer that left unsatisfied. In that case I would write the yelp review and specifically say that the one man there was unsatisfactory. Now there is some poor woman stuck in a chair with him doing her nails and quite unhappy about it all because the yelp reviews were amazing.

Ugh this sounds horrible!! I had a bad experience recently where I went to a place Ive been before for a massage. Usually I just get a foot massage there which is always amazing. Always had great customer service. I decides to do a foot massage and full body to treat myself but the full body massage was very painful. I've had a lot of massages before so I know that occasionally a massage can be a little uncomfortable of the therapist is working on a tender area or something. This was straight up painful. Of course I spoke up but the massage therapist spoke very little English. I think he couldn't understand me. I kept saying "lighter please" and finally I sat up and said "you are hurting me." He did finally begin to go a little lighter but by that time I was so uncomfortable and stressed I didnt even want him to continue. Luckily it was a 1/2 hour massage so it was over fairly fast. When I went to pay and give the receptionist the tip, she had the nerve to ask for more money! The massage was $25 and I tipped $5 so that's a 20% tip which I thought was generous considering I was in pain the entire time. I ended up feeling like I was severely bruised on my shoulders and neck for 4 days afterward. Never again.

Normally I do enjoy massages, pedicures, etc to relax and treat myself. I had a great massage and a facial today.

Same here. We're encouraged by the salon owner to make small talk but after a few comments with the clients I can tell which ones want to talk and which don't. If they give short answers I stop talking. Kinda prefer it that way.

I had a similar experience once in a hair salon. One of the hairdressers (not my regular as she was on a day-off) tried to sell me weight-loss products. When I firmly said I don't take pills and rely on my diet, he tried to argue with me on whether I was trying hard enough or not. I am crazy. I stood up and left halfway through without paying. :P
