Sodium Intake and Carb Counting Q's

  • I have seen a lot of posts regarding counting carbs...my coach hasn't mentioned doing this, should I be? I eat 3 IP packets a day and then follow the rules for dinner.

    If I only use the IP salt, should I be monitoring that? I sprinkle it on several things I make for dinner so I am sure I exceed the 1/4t requirement. At my last weigh in I seemed to be holding a lot of water...? I don't use any other salt.

    Nope! IP is designed so that you don't have to count the carbs...though many of us are inquisitive, and tracking macronutrients now is a good habit for P3/maintenance when it becomes necessary to track and tally everything you eat. But for now, if you follow the protocol sheet you're good!

    If you're retaining a lot of water, you might want to look at a few things:
    1. Are you drinking plenty of water during the course of your day? Believe it or not, the answer to water retention is DRINKING MORE WATER to flush it out!
    2. Are you eating proteins that are higher in sodium (some are naturally so, like steak and pork) or processed meats like ham or deli meat that have added sodium? That might be adding too much sodium to your diet.
    3. When you say you "exceed" the 1/4 tsp, are you measuring it out to see by how much? You might be going overboard and not know it.

    My coach told me to only use a 1/4 of a teaspoon per day of the ideal protein salt and if I needed or wanted more than that to use sea salt. It had something to do with the added potassium in their salt. I know coaches sometimes give different advice but maybe this will help.

    Real Salt has no added potassium, it's basically salt in the raw.

    IP has their own brand of salt now and it contains potassium
    I still use Real Salt too

    LOL I wonder if IP finally caught on that people figured out they could buy Real Salt elsewhere, so they had to "private brand" SALT. ugh.
  • We use sea salt only, as the alternative multivitamin and potassium brands we take ensure we have sufficient potassium without needing the IP variety.
