Walking and Eating...

  • I just started walking a couple days ago and I'm wondering if it's best to eat before or after I go walking. Which is the best for calorie burn?
  • They're both the same. It's more about how you feel than what it actually does, you will burn the same amount of calories either way most likely.

Whether or not you eat is up to you, but for me it depends on what time of day it is. If I'm walking first in the morning I will usually eat a banana with some almonds or a protein bar first. If I don't I get really hungry and too lethargic to complete my workout. But if I eat too much I feel too heavy too much. I need to eat enough to fuel my workout and then see me through my cool down and shower.

If I'm working out in the afternoon I don't eating anything since I've already had lunch.
  • I usually eat after, but that's a personal thing. I find i'm always a bit hungry after exercising, so it helps to have some healthy food after.
  • My breakfast always consists of oatmeal and a banana. But I was curious if I should go walking at 9-10am if I should wait or not.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.
  • I eat before I work out, depending on the time. I usually work out after work during the week. If I have a kickboxing class at 4:30, I'll eat some protein before then dinner when I get home. If I'm going to the gym, I eat dinner at 5:30 and workout at 7. I think it's a matter of preference.

  • It's interesting to note that eating upright or standing up can lower stomach pressure and lessen the likelihood of acid.
