  • Hi. I am new here. I am 50 and have about 50 lbs to lose as a goal. I started watching calories using myfitnesspal last week. I could use any advice, support, information
  • Hi Lori! No advice. Just a big welcome!
  • Thank you
  • Hey just a big welcome. This is hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I am determined to make it work. What I do is write down everything that I put in my mouth, and I look up the calorie count. When I get close to 1500 calories I quit eating for the day. This probably sounds a little nuts, but on Sunday I add all the calories I didn't eat during the week and use them up. I know on Sunday I can have a dessert as long as it doesn't surpass the amount of extra calories I have stockpiled. This probably wouldn't work for many people but it does for me.

That sounds like a good plan. I am trying to stay between 1200-1400 and adding more when I exercise. I don't want to make anything off limits because that is when I fail, when I get too hungry or feel deprived. So I am eating what I want as long as it fits in my goal. I am going to start exercising today. I found some things i can do at home like push ups and jumping jacks and I can go for a walk. I never counted calories before, it seemed so complicated, but I am using the myfitnesspal app and it seems pretty easy.
  • This week I haven't had the luck stockpiling as I usually do. I am in the process of trying to get my stomach to accept less food. It isn't cooperating this week so far, it did last week though, go figure LOL
  • Welcome, Lori! Your post title caught my eye, as I'm also "losing 50 at 50." AND we're about the same weight. Are you still liking MyFitnessPal? That's the tracker I've been eyeing up.
  • you can do this. I lost 70 pounds at age 54. It took stick to it to-ness. And I stopped lying to myself
  • Hi! Title caught my eye......things have been going good BUT with holidays coming up, I am going to need all the support and advice I can get!!!!
  • New here and I'm 53
Hi I'm new here and starting a low-fat diet with mostly veggie protein. Saw the documentary Sick Fat and Dying about the guy that did the juice fast for 60 days. Seriously considering this cuz I feel sick fat and dying. Anybody try this diet?
  • Im also 50 (almost in a couple of months) and wanting to loose 50 (actually 57). Working hard to be a foxy 50 but mostly a healthy one. I'm doing IP
  • Welcome! If I can lose 74 at 63 you can lose 50 at 50. I gave up sugar and white flour and gluten, don 't count calories. I'd say work gradually step by step. You can do this and we will be here.
  • Going to do this
    Hi
I just started on South Beach and have already seen the scale move this week.
I love to walk but yesterday went to the gym and did the elliptical. My back is sore today.
I have a 182 day chart to reach my goal.
I have to do this as my thyroid has turned me into a slug!
I am 64 and have had hypothyroidism since I was 50 when my menopause started.
  • That's great denwiz! I'm sorry about the thyroid thing . My niece has had similar problems all her life. So I know it's hard. Be grateful you can walk. That is my goal to be able to walk more than 5 minutes- well at least 15 minutes 3 times a day with out joint pain. The vet wants me to take my Doxie walking 3x a day for 15 minutes and I have to beg my grown kids to come to it- so rarely gets done.
  • Hi
Your title jumped out at me because I too am trying to shift the pounds having hit the big 50 in January. If it helps, I was really expecting it to be so much harder than dieting in my 20's and 30's, but was really pleased to find that my body seems to react in exactly the same way.
Since the 25th Jan I've lost almost 27 pounds. I'm currently aiming to get to 142, but will maybe go for 135 once I see how it feels.

Good luck, you can do this.
