The Wonderful Weekend! June 14 & 15

  • "I can see clearly now the rain is gone...." is my earworm this morning. We have been in heavy rain for three days but are getting a break this weekend. I had a pan on the back deck that was full to overflowing and it was 6"deep with straight sides! The garden behind the barn is a lake once again.

I am going to saddle up shortly and go to pick up the bread order for the Mill before Margo the Super Baker heads off to market. I've decided I'd rather do an early morning trip than have one at 8 Friday evening which just might interfere with my relaxation night.

We have a busload of folks coming to tour the Mill this morning and then are serving them a "picnic" lunch in the Town Hall. It's looking good with the white and green checkered tablecloths and field daisies in mason jars. The lunch is being catered by Wendy's Market Garden so the food is easy-peasy. I refuse to use paper or plastic plates and commercial dishwasher is still not fixed so I will be lugging plates home to do here.

Time for another coffee and then I'm off to drive through this very green world.

"It's gonna be a bright, bright, bright sunshiney day!"
  • Ruth, the picnic lunch sounds great! You're pretty devoted to lug home the real plates, they're lucky they have you.

Its a gorgeous morning here as well. I have to leave before 7 to get to work, but I'm out 2 hours earlier than the last job! (but have an hour drive...) I gave DH his father's day gift last night, since they're flex baseball tickets, and he decided that he did want to go tonight. I would thinking the home opener would be pretty entertaining, so I think we'll have fun! I even asked him to clean while I'm gone this morning, so maybe I get to relax (and weed my garden) this afternoon. A nap? Will I get a nap?

    Off to the new job!
  • And, I forgot to say CONGRATS to Cyndi!! Very, very exciting. I can't wait to see pictures. Is she going to find out the sex before hand?!
  • I was woken up by a beam of sunshine shining in my face this morning. What a welcoming sight after a week of heavy downpours and thunderstorms! My brother and I took Dad out to lunch yesterday and we nearly stuck there since it started flooding so bad. And after a very slow and hairy drive home, the rain let up.

Today's just a day for puttering around the house and doing little niggles. It's probably too wet to be playing in the garden and too soggy to mow the lawn. There's a hot air balloon festival going on this afternoon, and we may wander over there a bit. I'd love to go for a ride in one, but the tickets are $250! Yikes!
  • Good morning.

Ruth - Now I'm sharing your earworm.

Twynn - A nap sounds great. Enjoy.

Linda - You'll have to report back if you go for a ride. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough; I don't like heights.

I'm working this afternoon. My mom got a tablet yesterday and is coming over for tech support. That should be an interesting exercise in patience for me, and hopefully she won't expect too much since I'm really not that tech savvy or tablet knowledgeable. DH has become riding buddies with a friend of mine, a former neighbor. I haven't tried to ride outside since the first of my many escalating body issues almost 2 years ago. I admit that I'm a bit envious. But it motivated me to get back on my bike indoors. I really hate that and can only force myself to do 20 minutes. Baby steps.

    Have a great day.

  • Morning! Quick flyby as I leave on a short road trip to pick up DS1. He is coming home to work for a couple months before the fall semester.

Ruth, hope you have a successful luncheon!
    Tammy, enjoy the ball game.
Karen, baby steps are better than no steps, right?
    Cottage, have a great day.

And I think I also forgot to say congrats to Cyndi!

    Gotta go!
  • Good morning

Ruth I can almost smell that bread. I second tammy. They are lucky to have you

Twynn. I guess no camping this weekend. Enjoy baseball game

Cottage. Their are 2 things that are not on my bucket list. Helicopter ride and baloon ride. I have a friend whose pretty adventurous but said that a ballon ride the scariest thing in her life

Karen. I think I try my sons patience with mt tablet

Beth does your son's coming home involve lots of baggage

busy day today. I need beans so am making a 9 bean soup. Some gardening and have a request from dh for croissants which is time consuming. Maybe I'll get some time in for weeding too
    take care
    Sophie
  • Sneaking in at lunch again, good thing the boss aka me is pretty lenient lol Sunny skies here to. Karen come riding with me Do you have rail trails near you? Many have been converted to paved bicycling / pedestrian paths. Great riding and safe from traffic too. Are you riding your actual bike on a trainer or a spin/exercise bike? I loath my spin bike compared to my road bike (road bike wins even on the trainer too) If you have aches and pain issues go to your local shop. Schedule a fit appointment. They will make sure everything is adjusted to suit your body. Made a huge difference for me.

Ruth the picnic sounds absolutely lovely. Wish I lived closer

Cyndi 5:30 is sleepin in for me lol

    Beth enjoy DS coming home

Linda so nice you and your brother get to spend time with dad

    Tammy enjoy the game

Sophie, Bea, Debbie and all the chicks, have a great day

Work today and tomorrow. Then to Joe's buddy who is a mechanic. Something is leaking from the truck and DS lost the muffler lol. DS not happy I am taking the truck, oh well it is mine. Besides with gas over $4 again he should happy. My Camry gets 30 mpg, the truck 14 hmmmm

If anyone is lose by and feels like weeding my jungle I would greatly appreciate it
  • I could use some Beachers to help cut down my fake bamboo jungle. That Japanese knotweed is a horrible plant. It grows about 6" per day!

Yesterday's Mill event went really well and I had help with the dishes. One new member, Katherine is a gem. She did all the decorating of the hall as well. We had all four staff doing tours of the Mill and they sure looked tired out when I picked up their timesheets late afternoon. They perked up a bit when I told them I'd do the cheques today and reminded them the minimum wage was now up to $11 per hour.

It was a long day and I was somewhat glad we had more rain around 5 so I could NOT go out to garden!

Not sure what today will bring but I am going to take the platters and things back to the caterer and write her a cheque. Jazz will be glad to have his Goddess home for a change and I think Donna is coming over to clean or garden and will bring his wee pal, Lulu. I think Jazz really misses Disney as he really checks out the back room first thing in the morning.

Better have a decent breakfast and plan the rest of the day's food. I know it'll be calves liver and onions for dinner - Fegato Veneziana - maybe with some brown rice.

Happy Father's Day to our dear Dads. It was today 30 years ago that I bought this house back into the family. I will never forget the look on my Dad's face when I told him.
  • Good morning, Ruth, and what a wonderful memory of your dad!

It's a gorgeous, sunny, morning here and promises to be sunny for the next few days, so we'll finally dry out. The rain is doing wonders for the garden, though, and the cucumber vines are covered with wee baby cukes and I could see some butternut and spaghetti squash starting to form. I picked Swiss chard for supper and enough rhubarb to make a strawberry rhubarb pie for my dad for Father's Day.

Monica and Carley are coming out to spend the day, and I'm sure the pool will get a good workout. I offered to grill steaks but Jake wants lasagna for dinner, so that's even easier for me.

Today is also my oldest grandchild's 24th birthday - Happy Birthday Caitlyn!
  • Cottage, there is no way in h-e-l-l that you'd get me in a hot air balloon! Hope you have a great time with everyone today. Give your daddy a kiss for me. Happy Birthday Caitlyn!

Ruth, glad your event went so well. Bring Jazz down here to play with Emma Jean! But then, a friend said she humps everything in sight around new dogs, LOL...I had no idea.

Karen - I'm not a big bike rider myself (sorry, Jennifer).

Beth - where is DS at?

Sophie - how did your soup turn out?

Jennifer - hope you're surviving work. My new CR-V is getting 31.5 mpg on my work driving!

For me - yesterday was great - work went really well, I did get my nap , weeded the garden, and the family went to the ballgame, which was great fun. My kids were completely obnoxious, but they enjoyed it!

DH wants to go canoeing today, I think. Unfortunately, that means I'm the driver and meets him near the end. We'll see...
  • Good morning!

I'm prepping smoothies and need to separate all the dogs pills for the next two weeks. We had a beautiful drive over the hill yesterday, but now it's time to get back into the work mode. The restaurant is doing six dollar ribeye breakfast for Father's Day. It's going to be crazy busy.

    Have a wonderful day everyone!
  • Good morning

Ruth. So glad you have a gem to help you out at the mill

Cottage. Your garden must be beautiful. I have rhubarb but not enough to make a pie. My little grandson asked me when am I going to make a pie from those little red things in my garden. Maybe I should go on a hunt for some before I go up on Thursday.

Twynn. The soup was great. I buy the 9 bean mix at costco and then also add any veggies I have hanging around plus a must is always a little chilli pepper. The beans get soaked overnight. This time I also added some freekah.

Debbie. When do you leave. Have you been to key west before

croissants are rising. Waiting for dh is wake up. He is such a night owl. No worries for supper. My son is bringing ribs and chicken wings with all the fixings. I will have a nice piece of salmon
    take care

  • Quick fly by - Fathers' Day and a surprise 70th birthday party for my mom- not home be on plan, so back on tomorrow. No guilt- done with that counterproductive emotion.

Have an amazing day- be well!
  • Afternoon! I was up early today and managed to finish my mystery novel before DH was up. After that we went to BJ's for a BIG shop, now I'm about to run to Walmart for a few final things (like that cottage cheese. Cottage, are you the one who also favors Kraft brand?)

Tonight I offered to take DH out but he wants to grill. Who am I to dash the man's plans when he wants to make dinner? We'll do some chicken and a marinated pork loin for tonight, and probably some sausages for tomorrow. Yum! And it is certainly easier to stay OP when cooking at home.

Debbie, if we were near you DH would have been all over the steak breakfast!!
Tammy, DS1 attends University of Rochester.
Ruth, my mom made liver and onions when I was a kid but I haven't had it in years.
    Bea, have a lovely party.
Sophie, enjoy your dinner (and how nice DS is bringing it!).

Ok, need to finish off my chores. Have a great rest of the day!
