This final 10 pounds is SO SO HARD...

  • I really liked the threads on this website. Everyone is so cooperative and supporting! I am 52, and the 50+ thread looks pretty busy!

I was able to, with diet alone, drop from 180 to 158, and then stayed there for at least a year. At that time, I began to work with a physical therapist to help me deal with weak hips, weak shoulders from multiple cuff tears, knee instability (PFPS), and just some general problems with functional fitness. I was getting stiff getting off the floor - that was pretty scary at 50!!!

Boy, has PT with a good therapist helped! I joined the Y in February 2013, and have been going 6 days a week. We have a great facility, and 2 of those days are swimming, which I really excel at now. (love the Total Immersion program - I can go forever on freestyle now).

With HIIT twice a week, my triglycerides dropped 99 points, and my resting heart rate went from 75 to 65. Strength training on alternate days. Weight dropped to 151. So, all is going really well.... EXCEPT....

this next 10 lbs is a bear. I broke 150 lbs for a day or 2, but just hover here
I don't really want to eat less. I eat healthy - no refined flours, little to no sugar, plenty of lean protein, fish, eggs, fruit, veggies, nuts and greek yogurt. With all the exercise I am doing, my diet is a little heavier on the protein than in my diet-only days.

I am joining this forum because I think that simply sticking to my diet and continuing to tone up will probably do it. It is just so slow, and I can use the moral support around here.

I found this site because of links to the Couch - to - 5K program. I am looking into that. I think my hips are finally strong enough to give it a whirl.

Thanks for all the great suggestions on this site! It is inspirational.

  • Cheryl -- welcome! I'm working on my last 10ish as well, and like you, it is slooowww going and I don't feel like changing my eating (which is already healthy) to get there because I like where I am at! More similarities: I love the TI swimming program (which I used to do triathlons), can't say enough about it (people who've never done it don't know why I rave like a nutty when I talk about it), and I also used the C25k back in the day to start running! We're twinsies!

This is a great forum, you'll love it. Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll continue doing GREAT!
  • How incredibly wonderful, Mrs Snark! It was a real pleasure reading about someone who loves TI, and also used C25K. That's a real motivator. I think I'll probably have to double up on the weeks for C25K, unless I really surprise myself.

I thought it was quite funny that we both had beach pictures! Guess I know where you'll find us!
  • Hi Cheryl!

For me, first ten pounds were easy. The next, still not bad. The next, a bit harder. And so on.

I can't imagine how tough the last ten are going to be, but people like you are such an inspiration!

I agree with you that following a healthy and sustainable diet and exercise plan and not obsessing about the weight is the only thing you can do after a certain point. If calories out are more than calories in, you will eventually get where you want to be. It may take a while, but you will get there!

    Good luck!
  • Hi Cheryl! What wonderful news that you are doing so well! Congrats on the amazing weight loss, the increased activity, and the improved health! I wouldn't worry about the last 10 lbs. You are already at a healthy weight and if they are meant to come off, they'll come off, and if you start the C25K program, I imagine they will come off. If not, and you really want to weigh less, you'll either have to lower your intake of calories or bump up how many calories you burn a day. Whatever you decide to do, maintain or keep trying to lose, people here will support you! Good luck!
