Pork rinds, Percentages, and other Atkins Questions....

  • Hello all!

I'm new (day 2) to the Atkins diet and I wanted to check a few things with the experts on here to make sure I am getting this right.

First thing--pork rinds are okay to eat, right? (there's a statement that I never expected to say in my life!) The kind I have are only pork rinds and salt--0 carbs. These would be okay to snack on in moderation, correct?

My other question is with the Atkins diet you are to try to take 65% of your calories from fat, 35% from protien, and 5% from carbs, right? If that isn't right--could someone tell me what the right numbers are? I'm using Fitday.com to log what I eat to make sure that I am in the correct percentiles. I want to do this right.

    Thanks!!
    Becky
  • I do not try to get too much fat but make sure I get enough calories and protien. that is what I look for. min daily req of protein is for me over 100 daily and the caloric intake is somewhere around 1500
  • Well there are different stages of Atkins, but on the first one (Induction) it isn't the percentage of carbs you eat, but the number of grams. You're supposed to stick to under 20 grams of carbs a day, and even then you should be getting them from leafy greens, not sugar, flour, fruit, etc. To get the details on the rules check out www.AtkinsCenter.com and read up on Induction
  • Oh, P.S. I'm pretty sure pork rinds are fine. I don't think the book mentions them directly but they're carb free and I've been eating them and still losing weight. Best of luck, Atkins is a great program!
  • Careful of the BBQ pork rinds - they DO have carbs! I also find the salt in even the regular ones can cause water retention.
  • Thanks for the replies. I am on the induction phase of Atkins--sticking below 20 carbs a day. I just wanted to know if the percentages for my fat and protien were correct. For example, yesterday according to the foods I logged into Fitday.com, I consumed:

    1978 calories
    128 grams of fat
19 grams of carbs (5 fiber, not deducted)
    177 grams of protein

My percentages worked out to 60% fat, 37% protein, 3% carbs.

I was wondering if this was standard or perhaps a little high on the protein side of things...

    Thanks,
    Becky
  • do not worry about that. you will start to cut down on the amount of food you do eat, but i usally take in atleast that much and do great!!!
