AMAZED and Thrilled at Changes in Glucose Levels

  • And wondering if there are any other Type II Diabetics who have seen such results with Atkins (or other low carb programs)

I am a Type II DIabetic whose glucose levels have been climbing over the last few years (since menopause actually). I was able to keep things under control with just oral meds for several years. Up until last year I was on glyburide alone, but as the sugars climbed I increased the glyburide and added metformin. My Dr. informed me that we were in the last stages of oral med control and when we ran out of those options I would have no choice but to go with insulin.

I've been failing miserably with controlling my levels for the last six months or so - with evening reading in the mid-300's and mornings in the mid 200's.

Well - glory be - one week into induction and my night readings are between 110 and 115. I can hardly believe it! Can it be that the culprit has been carbs all along?

If that's the case - I don't care what happens with my weight, I will stay low carb just to stay off insulin and avoid all the scary late life consequences of unchecked diabetes.....

I know this is a very long post - but I am just beside myself with this discovery.

Have any of you had the same experience?
  • I am Type II as well and definitely know that low carbing lowers my levels. My doctor is really pleased with my last HA1C results. I am currently on 1500 metformin (glucophage) but expect to be able to cut that back soon. Now if I could just ditch some of this weight too!

Can you talk to your doc about getting rid of the glyberide? It pokes your pancreas to produce more insulin to fight sugar levels. The metformin works to make your cells less insulin resistant so may be all you need. Of course our doc is supposed to know best but ..... By the way, lots of docs still freak at the idea of low carbing to control diabetes. Mine is gradually changing his attitude as he sees my levels go down.
    PM me if you want.
  • Hi lemonade yes that is exactally what to expect with low carb!!!
  • Wow! T hat's terrific. I'm another Type II and I take Metformin twice a day. I notice that when I'm faithful to low carb, my glucose tests are only slightly above normal but when I start in with the potatoes, bread, cereal and..ummm...(the C word never to be mentioned here), then all my tests are way high. Even when I faithfully followed the Canadian Diabetes Diet, I couldn't get my blood glucose down the way I can with low carb. I don't know what the CDA expects when they promote orange juice, cereal, fruit and milk for breakfast. DUH!!!
  • I don't know about the diabetes - but my husband has ridiculously high triglycerides (he's only about 10 lbs overweight and his overall cholesteral was only about 200, but his tri's were in the 700's!) He works out 5 times a week (he spins! Ugh!) and he's never been an eater of sweets. Anyway, he's been lc'ing for about 6 weeks now and he's getting his blood work done again in about 2 weeks. We're really hoping to see a drop in the triglycerides! His doc has been saying, "lay off the desserts and eat low-fat!" Well, hubby never ate desserts and his attempts at a low-fat diet only made it worse! Maybe because he was eating a lot of bread, pasta etc????? We'll see... very anxious for the new blood work. I'll keep you posted.
  • Ypu will be suprised at how well this tirglycerides drop!!!
  • I am a type two diabetic as well. I am currently taking Avandamet. I am low carbing but having problems deciding which program to follow. Anyway, I don't know that following a program matters because as soon as I cut out breads, pasta, etc. I noticed a huge difference.

On March 26th my HgA1c was 7.0 which my Doctor was not happy with. Well yesterday I bought one of those A1c Now at home tests and was pleasantly surprised. My HgA1c is not 5.7 which is in the non-diabetic range. Can you believe it!

    I'm a believer!
