NERVOUS: First Day Back, I'm Getting Hunger Pains and Growing Doubt

  • I had been making some pretty good progress toward my weight loss goals toward the end of 2012... I was a size 14, creeping up toward a 16 last summer, but got down to a solid size 12 by Christmas. At Christmas, I tried on wedding gowns. I felt soooo good!

Then, shortly after the new year, I was attacked by a crazy man on the street. He tried to kill me. Thankfully, I fought back hard, and a bypasser car scared him away by honking at him. Thirteen stitches later, I have a large scar on my neck. Not only that, since January 2nd (when the event happened) I've gained back nine pounds. SIGH.

I am glad to be alive, but have let my appetite get out of control. Today was my first day back. I managed to do a small kettlebell workout this morning, and have started tracking calories. I'm soooooo hungry! I'm worried that I won't be able to get back on track.

Thank you for reading this. I think that I just had to get this out there.
  • Wow! I'm glad to hear that you made it through the attack!

You're going to be hungry. It's part of the process. When I got back on track I was hungry all the time for the first week. Maybe (plan permitting) you could have some chicken broth. I know it's packed with sodium and will make the scale go up, but in the long run the sodium will work it's way through your system and it will go back down.
  • I'm so sorry that happened to you! And so proud of you that you fought back and made it!!!!

Maybe you can find a self defense class in your area? That could be a nice workout AND boost your mental strength back up.

You came to the right place for support! There is a lot here.

As far as your appetite, what works for me is to drink a large glass of water and head out for a walk/run. The water temporarily fills me up and then quick paced exercise puts my hunger at bay. I've lost 24 pounds since 1 January, so it works for me!!!

Again, kudos to you for your bravery and ability to not freeze under those conditions.
  • Wow you are a strong woman!

If you eat your meals at the same time every day, the hunger will go away after a few days (maybe 2 weeks or so) as your body adapts and learns when to expect meals. But this is only if you're eating enough and not starving yourself.
  • Protein will keep hunger away the longest, followed by fat, and carbs have you hungry in an hour or two. Have protein with every meal and snack for the most satiety.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your attach. I hope they caught him.
  • Thank you for all of your suggestions and sympathy! My tummy's growlin', but I'll get through this...

I think that's just a fantastic idea. You get a feeling of control back and work off a ton of calories in the process. Win Win.
