Question about high protein diet from doctor

  • I have been doing Weight Watchers for over a year and not doing too well. I am loosing but very slow. My niece's doctor put her on a very high protein diet used for those who are very overweight and need to loose weight quick for surgery or other health reasons. The diet is all meat. No breads, veggies, or much fruit. You are supposed to follow it for two weeks stay off for a week and then do it for two more weeks and continue the cycle until you loose what you need to loose. This doesn't sound all that healthy to me but my niece is loosing weight on it. My brother is doing it too and he is loosing really fast. I am thinking of trying it temporarly to get a jump on my weight lose. I have a really slow metabolism and my thryoid levels are at the very low end but not below normal. I don't have any heart disease, I have low blood pressure, not diabetic, but I do have fybromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and I am disabled from a severe auto accident and can't exercise much. I am going to take up weight lifting again. I usede to lift weights 7 years ago but got hurt and gained over 100 pounds.

    Has anyone had any experience with such a diet? Is low carb a good idea for someone like me?
  • I think it would be worth a try. A lot of people have reported feeling much more energetic and upbeat overall when following a low carb plan. There are lots of tips and recipes here and you will find some great support too. Join us on the daily thread and let us get to know you.
  • Low Carb yes, but this, meat and nothing else diet?! I wouldnt be comfortable with that. Even if it is only 2 weeks at a time.

    Welcome btw
  • I agree with Robin - every low carb plan I have seen has plenty of veggies (with some restrictions) includes. I would check this out with your doctor first.

  • Many veggies have virtually no carbohydrates, few calories and obviously no fat. I can't imagine WHY there would be any benefit to cutting out ALL veggies. Atkins certainly promotes a LOT of meat, a few veggies and not much else (other than like cheese or whatever.) But no veggies at all? Hmmm... skeptical.
  • Hi kyred ~ and welcome
    The plan you're speaking of sounds very much like the Mayo Clinic Diet (which is NOT endorsed by the actual Mayo Clinic).

    If I remember correctly .....
    The plan allows for bacon & eggs for breakfast followed by a grapefruit or 6 oz of unsweetened GF juice.

    Lunch is salad and meat followed by same GF servings

    Dinner is similar.

    All meat portions are unlimited. And it's 12 days on and two days off.

    It's been quite some time so details are sketchy for me. A copy of the plan was given to me years ago by a hospital employee who said they used the plan as a temporary tool to help extremely overweight persons lose weight quickly in preparation of heart surgery.

    I followed this for about a month when I was trying to kick start my ol'bod into losing and then went back to my LC plan.

    We used to have a thread giving much more detail, I'll see if I can find it.
    Ruthie - perhaps you remember it?

  • It was deleted because it was getting nasty! Some folks forgot this site is about SUPPORT!

    I did post a copy of the Plateau Buster Plan in 2001 which is very similar to the so-called Mayo Clinic one.

    Here goes...........................
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here it is, direct from the Atkins Center (but don't expect to see it in the next edition). Eat ONLY what is listed and nothing else, not even any form of salad dressing when it says salad:
    Every morning: 1/2 grapefruit, black coffee or black tea.
    Day 1 lunch: 8 oz broiled steak, lettuce & tomato salad.
    Day 1 dinner: 2 hard boiled or scrambled eggs, 1 cup green beans, 1/2 grapefruit.
    Day 2 lunch: 8 oz lamb or beef patty, lettuce salad, 6 oz tomato juice or tomato
    Day 2 dinner: steamed squash, cauliflower & green beans, 6 oz sugar free apple sauce. If you prefer, repeat day 1 dinner.
    Day 3 lunch: 8 oz lamb or beef patty, lettuce and celery salad, 1 apple (medium sized).
    Day 3 dinner: 8 oz broiled chicken, white meat only; stewed tomatoes, 4 oz prune juice (the latter only if constipated).
    Day 4 lunch: 2 scrambled eggs, 1 cup green beans, 6 oz tomato juice or tomato.
    Day 4 dinner: 8 oz broiled steak, lettuce salad, 6 oz pineapple juice.
    Then return to Atkins on day 5. remember, don't put any dressing on the salads. This should put you back into ketosis."
  • I have friends that have fibro and feel so much better with the low carb plans. but I agree you need the veggie for the minerals and nutrients and blocking them out of your diet for 2 weeks is totally no good. grab a PP book or an atkins new revolution and read those diets are really mcuh more sensable and able to be followed. even if your doc suggests this plan I really do not think that jumping from diet to diet is that good. and every 2 weeks you will be having to go though withdrawl!! NOT for me once is more than enough!!!
    remeber your vits and water!!
  • Thanks for reposting the plan Ruthie, I need that right now
