How do I start?

  • Hello. I have been lurking here for quite some time. I am 57 years old.
5'10" 233 lbs. poor diet, flabby. walking is my only exercise and that is not daily. I work full time have 2 grown children and a new grandchild that i watch on the weekends. I put my job and my sleep first. my husband does the shopping and the meal preparation therefore it is fast and usually not healthy. I need to take control but i just don't have the energy. How do I get started? I feel pretty good physically but I look overweight and frumpy! HELP! some tips to get me started....

  • Hmm, I am by no means any type of expert since I, too, am still at the beginning of my journey, but here's some thoughts:
    1) maybe pick one thing you can do to make your life healthier (get up 30 minutes early 3 days a week and go for a walk, or go for a walk before your grandkid comes over on the weekend)
    2) brain storm if any of your friends are trying something healthier (like weight watchers, a biggest loser challenge, etc.) because having someone to do it with you and give you tips on what you're doing is helpful.
    3) EATING is a lot of the battle, so something probably needs to be done about your husband's not so healthy cooking. Would he be open to cooking healthier, or buying you something else (more salads/chicken/sandwiches, etc. instead of pizza/pasta/fried chicken)? Or maybe a meal plan thing (like jenny craig, nutra-system, or just eating a Smart One for dinner instead) would be helpful at first?

I hope you can find your "groove" too
  • McCull has some great starters.

There are so many tips on the board and challenges, which you've probably already noticed. Since you already walk a little, take a look at the Support the Troops, Walk to Afghanistan challenge - we have 1500 miles to go. Join any time, no schedule, no pressure, just note the miles you've walked. It may even be an incentive to walk just a little longer! (Or you can use any exercise you please.)

    Good luck!
  • Welcome and good luck on your journey!!!
