Protein Bars?

  • I'm a pretty busy girl these days and I'd rather sleep than make breakfast... hehe I just picked some Detour protein bars up at Costco today that have anywhere between 1 to 3 grams of net carbs. They are lower in sugar than most I could find. I am a little worried that these aren't the healtiest option and may prevent weight loss. Is there anything to worry about or is this an OK idea?
  • No one thing (unless you have medical issues) is going to 'prevent weight loss'. At the heart of it all is calories in versus calories out.

I find that the detour bars aren't the best for me because even their low sugar ones are still pretty high in calories (at least for the large ones I have seen, though they may make a smaller one that I'm not aware of) so when I do eat protein bars I opt for the Quest bars.

Definitely check them out! They have them at GNC and they sell them online, but you really can't beat their nutrition stats. Not only that, but most of them are made with natural ingredients and none of them have that fake chocolate coating so they travel extremely well and don't melt!

My second favorite are the small sized Supreme Protein bars. They're a bit more candy bar-esque and don't travel as well but they also have some pretty respectible stats and feel like a treat.

  • I support Joss's opinion on the Quest bars. Quest bars are the only "traditional" bars I will eat/recommend. I don't really eat protein bars more than once in a blue moon anymore, but when I do - those are them! Always be sure to check ingredients on protein bars, they can be kinda scary depending on the maker and ingredients.
  • I third quest bars. I LOVE them and unless I'm in a bind I won't buy anything else. It's definitely a bit harder to track them down than the other bars available, but totally worth it.

If I can't find a quest bar, I like Pure Protein bars, or the Luna protein bars.

GNC is having a sale right now actually. Buy three bars, get one free of any kind of protein bars. So of course I used this sale to buy four quest bars
  • I will look into the Quest bars. If they are only available at GNC, I probably will opt for something else. The Detour bars have between 170 and 190 calories, so I don't think that's very high in calories at all.
  • I've actually had the Detour bars you are talking about (got them at Costco as well). I found them quite filling (and the peanut butter one reminded me of a reeses!) I would have one and be full for a couple of hours. I don't feel like they stalled my weight loss at all, but I didn't eat them that often.

^ very true words! I love protein bars, my secret way to sneak in a bit of sugar!
  • I love my Luna bars! I eat one at breakfast before I work out and I'm usually good til lunch. The s'mores one is amazing.
  • Protein bars sound great! I only have experience of protein shakes but they are lovely and filling. Chocolate flavoured ones are the BEST!
