  • My son is in the Army and will soon be deployed to Afghanistan. In his honor and that of all Military I'd like to challenge everyone to walk/exercise your way to Afghanistan. This distance is a grueling 7,640 miles, which I cant do all on my own, even in the 9months that I will be doing this challenge. You can do what ever exercise you choose and figure out the miles any way you'd like (time/distance, etc.) It would really mean a lot to me if you'd join me, even if it's not for the entire 9 months of his tour. Help me to make the journey!

This is a way of keeping me a little distracted while he is over there and will make me feel a little closer to him, though I know in reality he will still be so far away.

I will be starting on Monday 11/12/12. Put your exercise and miles and then tally to the persons #'s before you, so we have a running daily tally. You can join in, drop in or leave and comeback anytime. I just want to make the 7,640 miles and I KNOW we CAN do it!!! Thanks to all who join!!!! I will add the final date of the challenge as that time draws near (when my son is due to come home). Plan on around August 2013.
  • Great idea! Count me in! I will be counting 10 minutes of exercise as one mile.

Too bad I can't count Sunday, since I did 70 minutes and plan on Monday a my break day LOL. Hope some others join us, as that is a loooooong walk LOL.
  • Very good idea! I would love to join!

I'll count every 20 minutes of exercise as a mile.

The plan tomorrow is 90 minutes of hot yoga and a 40(ish) minute Insanity workout, so hopefully I'll be able to add 6.5 miles.
  • Thanks so much Misti and EricAnn! It really means a lot to me <3 Misti, I was in your wonderful state and city two weeks ago visiting my son (before he leaves) and I have to say, rain and all, it is a really beautiful state!
  • I am in!
  • Thanks bigmomma! Yes, we do have a beautiful state. And you just missed the sun because we had the dryest summer on record LOL. But I LOVE the rain and in fact moved back here from Fort Lauderdale because I couldn't stand all the hot sun.

And yay that other are joining in because that is a LONG way to walk!!!
  • I would love to walk to Afghanistan with you. I think this is a great idea. Hope your son stays safe as you make your journey towards him. I will also count every 20 minutes of exercise as 1 mile. Good luck everyone!
  • I'll help out! My brother just returned from Afghanistan and my husband is currently on his 9th deployment to Kyrgyzstan. 20 minutes of exercise per mile sounds good to me.
  • Welcome Fatness, Nikki and Lambiechop and thanks for the support!

Lambie, I'm so glad your brother came back safe and will be praying for your husband. 9th tour, WOW, I don't know how you do it.....you must be really strong!

Thanks everyone for walking with me, I knew there was no way for me to go the distance alone.....I know I'm going to be a wreck while he's there
  • I'm in. My brother just got back from Afghanistan earlier this year, and my best friend was in Iraq a few years ago.

I'm training for a half marathon in early 2013 and then a full marathon in late 2013 , so I'll be counting miles as miles.
  • Well, others seem to be using 20 minutes exercise as a mile but in all the other threads I've done here it has been 10 minutes so I am sticking with that for me.

I'll start us! I did 30 minutes today of walking and physical therapy exercises.

    7640 - 3 = 7637 still to go
  • Quote:
    7640 - 3 = 7637 still to go
Unfortunately I was only able to do my Insanity workout (had some tummy troubles today), so:

    7637 - 2 = 7635 still to go
  • Welcome Nikel1979!

I walked 1 mile today......hoping to do more tomorrow, if time allows!

    7635-1=7634

    Wow, look.......6 miles closer already
  • Nov. 13: 1.7 miles
  • Count me in. I will walk 3-4 times per week for 4-5 miles each time.

    11/12 5.1 miles

    7634-1.7-5.1 = 7627.2
