  • Need some help with cooking turnips. I'm sick to death of broc, cauliflower and getting tired of asparagus. I also bought some rutabagas.....Any and all ideas are appreciated.
I'm on day 4 and I feel the cravings fading away....

Roast them, cut them into french fries and bake them, use them in soups, cook and puree to add to the soups. LOTS you can do with them!

Rutabagas are my FAVORITE now. I either oven roast them or use them in place of potatoes when I do a roast in the crock pot. I use Rainbow's recipe to make Maple Rutabaga bisque with the leftovers for a DELICIOUS puree soup!
  • do i peel them? this is my first experience with them? just treat them like a potato?
  • There's a rutabaga puff recipe in one of the recipe Threads. I think I'm going to bring it to thanksgiving so I have something to eat, plus it's yummy.

Yes - the skins are thick so I use a paring knife on turnips and I cut the skin off the rutabaga with a knife the same way I used to do butternut squash. And yes, just about anything you can do with a potato can be done with a turnip/rutabaga!
  • Have you tried fennel? It's sweet.
  • thx for the ideas! I haven't ventured out to the turnip family yet but need some variety soon! DH just got me some rhubarb!
  • I use turnips in stir fries and also like them roasted with olive oil + a little curry.
  • For the record . . turnips and rutabagas are different.

Turnips are small white and purple, rutabagas are bigger with yellow/brownish and purple. Although a lot of people (me included) call rutabagas, turnips. Just make sure when you buy rutabagas at the grocery store they aren't punched in as turnip. I had this happen to me and I would have ended up paying twice as much!

My favorite way to do them is in the oven. I cut them up into squares (kinda like hashbrowns) and toss them with EVOO and spices. Yummy! First time I made them the hubby said he liked them better than potatoes. :O You can also boil and mash them. I've had them mashed and mixed with cauliflower and that was good.
  • I use a lot of seasoning to mask some of the bitterness of both. I cut them like shoestring fries and season with mrs dash garlic and herb.

They don't get crispy like fries, but do taste good.

You might want to try preparing the brocoli and cauliflower differently, if you are getting tired of them. My favorite is roasting them in the oven with some salt & EVOO.

Actually (forgive the nerd in me!) rutabagas are Swedish or Yellow turnips. Jicama is a mexican turnip. Love that turnip family!
  • I'm obsessed with jicama!
  • the last two jicama I've bought has been brown inside. Won't buy it again unless the produce guy is working and will cut it open for me!
  • I mentioned this earlier but I cook 'em in a crock pot with WF maple syrup and they turn into "sweet potatoes" -- VERY yum! But I put 'em in the night before, cook 'em all night, and add my meat in the am. All is ready to go for supper!
  • P.S. No offence but how can you be "sick to death" of anything after only 4 days?? LOL...
