Travel and dieting

  • I have to travel a lot for work. Since the middle of August I've had to travel away from home every week. Some trips are just 2-3 days at a site about 60 miles away and it's a car trip (these are relatively easy to stay on diet). Other trips have been up to 10 days to Europe. I've been able to maintain and even lose a little since all this traveling began and I've found some things that have helped me a lot, but I'm looking for suggestions.

Things I have learned for dieting while traveling:
Stay out of buffets, even seemingly healthy ones like Souplantation (which, if you're not familiar with it has primarily soups and salad, but it's all you can eat and they have delicious corn bread). A corollary to this rule is to stay away from any free hotel breakfast which is almost always dominated by tempting carbs.
Drink protein shakes instead. If I'm traveling somewhere that is known for the food, it seems a shame to deny myself entirely, so I bring along some single serving protein shake packets and use those for at least one meal and sometimes two. I save my real meals for the ones I can't get out of for business reasons.
Try to order healthy options in restaurants and tell the waiter not to bring bread (bread is my worst downfall!). Always order salad when it's available with dressing on the side. One of the nice things about Europe is that the restaurant portions are much more reasonable (i.e. smaller) than in the US so that does help a bit.
Try to eat the lowest calorie things on the plate first to fill up before the higher calorie stuff.
Refuse to eat anything that isn't absolutely delicious. I'm sort of a foodie and really enjoy good food, but I have high standards, and there's no point in devouring calories that are not rewarding in some way.

Any other suggestions? I'm leaving next week for a 3-day meeting in the US with my work group. We all work from home in different states and countries and only get together twice a year so I will have to show up for at least 2 dinners at fancy restaurants. There is no avoiding bread on the table. They always go overboard and order fabulous lunches and breakfast buffets during the meeting. I can probably show up late for breakfast and skip that, but it's going to be tricky to disappear at lunch time.
