Water retention in the morning?

  • Ok for the last few days I've weighed 2-3 lbs MORE in the morning than the night before (I usually eat supper around 9 and then go to bed at midnight to 1am, so I usually have had time to digest food). This is screwing with my weigh-ins! I don't know whether to count the night before's or the morning's. I can feel my engagement ring feeling snugger in the morning than later in the day too.

Has anyone experienced this? What can I do? Should I just choose the lower weight between morning and evening weigh ins until this evens out?
  • Don't know why the water retention is happening, but I will address the scale question.

Record what will keep you motivated. I recommend noting if you change the time of your weigh-in and why you chose to do that. But you are not collecting data for a scientific study. You are helping yourself stay motivated and accountable. The numbers themselves are meaningless. They only matter in comparison to the other numbers.
  • Exactly what LaurieDawn said.

Is the scale going down consistently if you compare your night weigh ins?

Is the food different? Different quantities? More sodium packed? Are you drinking more or less liquid than you were previously? Is your calorie intake higher?
  • I've switched to a a soup/salad all day every day diet. More caffeine as school kicks up. Also, I've been sick recently and I tend to get mucousy in the morning, maybe that? Also we just started using the radiators in our apartment so maybe the air is drier?

Do you weigh yourself at night after you've done all your drinking (coffee, tea, water, etc.) for the evening? And do you weigh yourself in the morning before drinking anything? If so, then you're defying the laws of physics! Or else you need to acquaint your scale with the trash can.
