Ok so I bought a new scale today, got it home opened it up and it's the one thing that I try to keep out of my house... glass.

How durable are these things? It will be in the kitchen (our only hard floor), and well things tend to be dropped in my kitchen.

I have a house full of kids, glass that has the possibility of exploding is not something I try to keep in the house..lol

So should I return this thing??

I have a glass scale from Weight Watchers and have had no problems with it (other than it refusing to move down!) but I keep it in my bathroom. If you must keep in the kitchen, maybe you could keep it under something? If you're worried that you can't keep it away from things, then I would just return though.

I have a glass scale. I keep it in my bathroom though. It has lasted for over a year vs one five year old boy.

I'd be worried about it in the kitchen though, too much traffic, too many potentials for a crash landing, right on the scale.

Is there any way you can slide it under a cabinet or something, and slide it back out when you need to weigh?

I think I'm just going to take it back. Why in the world are all of the digital ones glass any more?

I did try standing on it and it feels sturdy, I'm just really afraid of it in the kitchen. GAH, I read box after box and still came home with one that was glass.

Like Luckymommy, I have the glass WW scale too. It is made of tempered safety glass -- meaning that it is more resistant to breakage than normal float glass, and if it is broken, it usually breaks into relatively small particles, which are less likely to cause serious injury.

It is on a tile floor in my bathroom. I can say that the scale can take weights of over 400 lbs (because that is where I started out and, in fact, when I was over 405 it wouldn't register anymore). So, that little glass scale can take a punishment! I have three kids, the youngest being my two year old boy. He was carrying around the scale the other day (but fortunately didn't drop it). I am not sure what would have happened if he did.

Mine is the Withings SUPER expensive smart scale. It is glass. My daughter has dropped it multiple times on my tile bathroom floor and it has not broken.

My fear is it getting kicked by little feet in front of the pantry.. or ummm being used to reach something just out of a little ones reach and a can of who knows what falling on it. I can so see it smashing.

I'm going to have my hubby look at it and see what he thinks. he did say we could move the fridge over far enough that I could move it every time I use it and put in standing between the fridge and the cabnets... but isn't that bad for scales?

I'm extremely clumsy and accident prone when it comes to glassware and other breakables, and yet I've never had a problem with my glass scale. I've had it for over ten years, and not even a scratch (wish I could say the same for the glassware we received as a wedding present in 2002 - the entire set is long gone except for one lone water glass).

I had a glass scale for several years and had great luck with it. I did keep it in my bathroom though.

Hubby says he thinks it will be fine. If it stays where I want it, its pretty much out of the way but you have to walk past it for some things.... like going in and out the door we use the most. If I see it's getting kicked and shifted a lot I will start sliding it beside the fridge and getting it out to use it.
