What does actual fat feel like (odd discovery)

  • Now that I'm somewhat thin if I press around on my abdomen area I feel a ton of all these little, very hard deposit thingys that feel like tiny cysts right under my skin, above the muscle. Are these fat deposits?? I'm a little freaked out. :/
  • in my experience, this isnt normal. you may have lipomas?

  • ^That sounds about right. Glad it's nothing harmful but I'll ask my Doc the next time I go for my GYN exam. If I had to guess it's been there a very long time I just never examined that closely before. It's localized to just my abdomen area and luckily not visible. Thanks for the link.
  • This article has some info on what you are describing. I have heard this on the boards here before also, so it sounds like it is somewhat common with weight loss .

Thank you for posting this. I wish people wouldn't jump to medical diagnoses after a few sentence post- it just freaks everyone out. It's very unlikely that the majority of one person's fat is going to be made up of lipomas, especially since a lot of us have lumpy fat (there have been threads before and I have a number of friends who have it).

If it feels like little tapioca balls of varying sizes (but all pretty small) making up the majority of the fat, don't panic! A lot of us have it. For some people, adipose tissue can be pretty lumpy. Also, read the above link. I began to notice it more when my skin was less tight (not super loose, but just less tight) because there wasn't the same skin pressure compressing it into what seemed like a solid whole. If you've lost more fat in the past (or have gained and lost many times), you're more likely to have slightly looser skin and notice this, whereas those who have only lost 5-10lbs probably wouldn't. Also, the fact that it's mostly in your belly suggests the same thing, as most women gain/lose most often in their belly, which would stretch the skin and make it noticeable.
  • I have this too, and I had read Lyle's squishy fat article before, luckily. I feel this in my abdomen, in my legs, almost everywhere. For me I think it's because my skin hasn't kept as tight to my fat and so it's easier to feel. Feels like tiny marbles. I take it as a good sign.
  • Thanks, Guys! Glad to hear this means my fat is moving in the right direction.

Kelly315, I does feel like tapioca balls..very good description.
  • Thanks for posting the link I've had these but forgot what they were called. In a panic asked my doctor & she not only reassured me, showed me one on her neck. Common.
  • Normal.

Doesn't hurt to ask a dr though

certainly wasnt trying to "freak everyone out". a friend of mine had those so i was just making a reasonable suggestion. lipomas arent dangerous and arent a big deal. i didnt suggest she had a brain tumor.
