boca or morning star

  • does anyone know if for dinner we can have boca burgers or morning star as our protein for dinner? this would make eating at work much easier for me
  • I don't eat them myself but did a little hunting for the nutritional info:

    1 Boca burger:
    70 cal (5 from fat)
    0.5g fat
6g carbs (4g dietary fiber so 2g net carbs)
    13g protein

Morningstar farm burgers (depending on specific type)
    100-120 cal
    2-4g fat
    10-13g protein

The problem I see is with the protein. We are recommended to have 8oz of protein for dinner - 40-50g of protein. You'd have to have 3-4 of these burgers to get in enough protein, which would then jack up your calorie count and not really be within the guidelines for what we should be eating. If convenience is an issue, try pre-cooking a bunch of lean meat and just keep it in your freezer/fridge already portioned out. Then you're not cooking every night but know that you're getting what you need.
  • The boca burgers look pretty comparable to ground meat to me.

A burger made from 95% lean ground beef (8 ounce weight before cooking)

    297 calories
    12g fat
    0g carbs
    45g protein

Four Boca burgers (given the stats quoted) would contain

    280 calories
    2g fat
    8g net (useable) carbs
    52g protein

Three burgers would bring the calorie count down to 210 calories, the protein down to 39g and the carbs down to 6g. Not quite the minimum, but pretty close (only 1g off).

The main issue I would think would be the carbs more than the protein (and whether or not you want to eat 3-4 burgers). However, if you're not using any of your sweetener or dairy carb grams, wouldn't that come out about the same?

Yes, you can. I use the Boca burger - vegan original version from Costco that has 19 gm protien and 3 gms of net carbs per burger. Not sure if Morningstar is allowed.

  • Very good point - I guess the thought of eating three or four veggie burgers made the calories seem higher
  • I'm here at work rattling my brain on what to eat for dinner. I didnt prepare anything last night

I've had nights like that (I work 3pm-11pm at the hospital). I've had to jerry-rig a dinner with a combination of a bunless turkey burger, a bunch of hard boiled egg slices, and whatever meager offerings there are at the salad bar in the hospital cafeteria. Not sure what your access to food is like at work, but even if you have to order out there should be something you can do.
  • Had to offer my 2 cents, and Im not doing IP

    BUT............

Taste wise, I think morningstar tastes better....but BOCA has better nutritional value.

Sometimes I pick up a pre-cooked chicken from the grocery store on my way home and then just serve it with a salad for a quick meal. I remove the skin and eat the white meat only.

I have 1 hour commute home and my kids have their fall activities (football & poms). I don't have a lot of time to cook before we have to leave for the kids activities, so the pre-cooked chicken works out well for me. I'ts my idea of fast food while on IP
  • I have Giant next door to my job maybe i can see what they have there

Agreed.. Morningstar is better with taste. Also.. not on IP Diet but IP alternatives. So there's the disclaimer...
