Timing of Protein

  • Most days after I eat my 2c. of vegetables for lunch I don't feel hungry and am not able to eat my protein as well. I usually end up drinking a shake on the way home from work. Then I either don't have a third Protein(not including the dinner protein) or I might have a bar or something as I'm making dinner. Is there any problem with this or am I really protein loading the later part of my day?
  • I do the same thing...so I would love to hear what other people have to say!
  • My coach told me to eat every 4 hours. So I eat an IP food for breakfast, lunch and snack and then I have my dinner meal.

Even if you dont feel hungry, you must eat your 3 packets, get your oil, salt, 4 c. veggies and water in.

If you dont, you might not see the scale move much. (it's a possibility anyway)

    good luck!
  • You need to get all of your packets in. Your body needs the protein.
  • So if you get all your packets in, is it ok if I have most of the protein later in the day? I sometimes have two packets and my meat all after 3 pm ( an sometimes all within 2 hours)
  • There is a little bit of logic to timing your protein. For example, if you had it all during 1 meal in the morning, there is a probability that your body will notice the lack of food for another 23 hours and possibly put you in "starvation" mode, a fat storage mode. This is the opposite of ketosis, a fat burning mode.

When you eat protein, your metabolism spikes. That's good and protein fuels ketosis, a state we love. Spacing your proteins over the waking hours and being sure to have a protein before bedtime staves off the starvation mode.

So, if not hungry, try to just eat half your protein at the designated time, however, eating your 3 protein packs and your full dinner every day is non-negotiable and you need this protein to prevent your body from cannibalizing. Remember your heart is a muscle and needs protein to keep functioning. All your organs need protein to function well.
  • I tend to get hungry in the morning. I eat two hard boiled egg whites around 6am with coffee. Around 8-830am I have a shake. 12-1230 IP and veggies, 3-4 pm I have my IP snack, dinner at 7-8pm. If I get hungry or a craving after dinner, I will have a decaf fruit flavored hot tea with splenda.
  • I was originally having a hard time getting in all the "real food" between lunch and dinner. So my coach and I decided that it would be best for me to eat this way:

Breakfast- scramble made of - 1 egg, 2 egg whites, 1 cup sautéed spinach, 1/2 cup sautéed mushrooms, 1/4 cup green onions, 1/4 cup peppers. 1 cup tea.

    Mid morning - IP shake

Lunch - 1 or 1/2 cup veggies, 1 IP shake

Mid afternoon - 1/2 cup veggies

Dinner - 1-4oz lean protein, 1 or 1/2 cup veggies

Dessert- 1 IP packet ( usu choc shake or jello)
