Have you ever been fooled thinking something was healthier than it is?

  • Well, it happened to me today. I was wondering if this has ever happened to you, and if you can detect that you're actually not eating as healthily as you thought you were.

Today I went to Chipotle, which is supposed to have very fresh and somewhat organic ingredients. Luckily, I had read that the tortillas/rice add lots of calories so I got a salad with barbacoa, black beans, corn salsa, tomato salsa, guacamole, and lettuce.

First thing was that the portion was astronomically huge! I guess in Wisconsin one helping of guacamole is three HUGE scoops. Of course I made a big dieting blooper and ate the whole thing... what could I do? I had walked several miles to the mall and didn't want to tote the whole thing home.

I went home and looked up all the ingredients to put on Caloriecount, and I saw the sodium content went through the roof! I think my meal was 2200 calories alone.

In any case, have you been fooled by hearing that something was healthier than it really is? When did you find out your mistake? What did you do to fix the situation in terms of your eating for the rest of the day/future changes?
  • Did you think while you were eating it that the portion seemed huge? were you really "fooled"? It sounds like you knew it was too much food for you but didn't want to carry it home (you did carry it home, in your belly.)

Usually it's more of an intentional denial than being "fooled."

    I agree with this.

Chipotle is great... for 2 meals .

That said - I think 2200 is a bit of an overestimate for what you had. I usually get something similar and it clocks in under 1000 for the whole thing (that I split in half for another meal).

If you don't eat tons of processed foods, I don't think sodium is a big deal. We need salt to live, afterall. (Most of your sodium came from the salt in the salsas btw)

  • Simple things can always get confusing...
For example... a lot of people think rye bread is "healthier" than white bread... yet its practically the same from certain points of view.

Just as some labeling, sugar free, fat free, trans fat free.

I love the labelling for something like Licorice - trans fat free - why would trans fats ever be in a candy like licorice? LOL
  • I used to think that a ceasar salad with grilled chicken was healthy...yah..NOT...Had one at white spot and it ended up having 550 calories for a freaking salad!!! Not doing that again.
  • Oops! I meant 2200 mg of sodium. Probably around 600-700 calories so not horrible.

But yeah, I think Seagirl's right; I can put myself in denial. I often say "Well this at least isn't as unhealthy as other foods" (especially regarding... FROZEN YOGURT... haha).
  • You can leave food on your plate - you don't have to finish it all or carry it home. You weren't fooled, you made a choice to eat it.

Would love to hear an explanation of the things you mentioned.
