Well that's unusual

  • I bought myself a food scale today. I've been wanting one for a while and I found one I liked on sale this afternoon. Dh went out running, and the kids are playing together rather than fighting, so I've been amusing myself weighing foods that I eat (frequently and less frequently).

First shock, a serving of tortilla chips (50g) is actually way more than I thought, and I'd totally be willing to "spend" the calories on a 25g serving once in a while. It actually is more than 3 chips.

Second shock was strawberries. I eat frozen strawberries or blueberries with granola and yogurt virtually every morning. I've been calling what I take 1.5 cups (73 calories) on fitday. According to the bag, 140g (1cup) is 50 calories. Measuring it out, I'm definitely giving myself closer to 140g than 200+, and cheating myself out of 23 calories. I'm sure I'm more than making up for it in other areas.

I feel like a kid with a new toy.
  • Very cool, Only Me!

I felt the same as you did when I got my new digital scale. It is surprising what you can learn with them. Enjoy your new toy.
  • I ordered one on amazon. I can't wait to use it!
  • I love my food scale! 1 oz of cheese is always more than I think it is, and a serving of meat is bigger too. I was try to go by those "pair of dice" "pack of playing cards" sizes and those were much smaller than a serving.

It makes it so easy to portion out lunches for the week, too. I measure my grains into the tupperware, put it on the scale and zero it out, then add meat to 3 or 4 ounces, then add a cup of veggies.
  • I had the same kind of experience as you. Additionally, I was always bothered by the fact that I could only guess at some portion sizes. But, with the scale it is much easier to be exact. I weigh almost everything in grams and Fitday is great in that you can adjust everything by weight. Just knowing that I'm measuring accurately has made a big mental difference and is helping me to stay on track!
