I Passed the DQ Test!

  • Well ok, it wasn't really a test per say, but while out and about running errands last night, my husband asked if I wanted to stop at Dairy Queen on the way home. I have often asked him to stop by Dairy Queen when he wasn't really in the mood.

And for the first time, I was the one that wasn't really in the mood! I told him to go ahead and make the stop, and when we hit the drive-thru he asked what I wanted.

    Nothing.

I was not annoyed, not resentful, and didn't feel like I was missing out on anything when he ordered a large chocolate shake. I chose to have nothing because I genuinely didn't want anything off that menu; so not worth all the sugar and calories. What a great feeling to not be torn over making a good decision about a treat. This is a really big deal for me! I'm a known sugar addict and I think severely cutting it down these past ten days have made a huge difference with my cravings.

My usual order there has been a large Heath Blizzard. Looks like I saved myself 154 grams of sugar and 1260 calories!

Er . . . I did take the maraschino cherry off his shake when he offered it to me though . . . and I think I can live with that.
  • Yay! Good for you! I too have been cutting way down on my sugar and it does get easier! Keep it up!
  • That is awesome! Sugar is a big deal for me also, it's the one downfall I always have. Not carbs, it's sugar. Sigh. Glad to know you're doing well motivating!
  • I was crying on the couch last week after a particularity horrible day....my boyfriend was trying to cheer me up and said "do you want me to walk down to the dairy queen?? get you a peanut buster parfait???" and i was feeling so poorly that day, i was so close to saying yes...but i resisted! huge step for me :-)

Yay for beating the dairy queen monster!
  • Yay! That is definitely a difficult test. You showed great strength and commitment.

I love DQ but in addition to the calories (and oh is it a lot of calories) but I'm not supposed to eat dairy either so best to just avoid it all together.
  • Good for you!! Be proud--that Dairy Queen monster is hard to overcome.

I will sometimes get one of those no sugar added frozen treats (the orange dream bar or the chocolate one)--they aren't too bad if you aren't used to the good stuff

I am also veryyyyyyyy grateful that they finally are doing what I've been saying for years--mini blizzards! Still a big splurge while you're on a diet, but definitely satisfying. I had a couple last summer.
  • re:
    That's awesome!

Amusing too as I did not pass the same test as you Friday night. They were buy 1 get one .99, so i left with a small oreo cheesequake in hand.

Keep in mind though, I used to have a large one EVERY weekend, and this was the first one in months, so it was a pretty big treat.

I didn't know they offered minis now..........
  • Great job!

I can't believe how many calories are in shakes and Blizzards. It's crazy. You could pretty much eat a burger and fries and it would be less calories than a large shake...
  • There is no Dairy Queen in my town. THANK GOD. (The pineapple shake is my downfall. I blame my grandmother for introducing me to them.)
  • There is a Taco Bell right across the street from my apartment in one direction and a dairy queen right across the street in another direction, along with a fantastic pizza place AND chinese food restaurant! Its so much temptation in such a small area, so when i go on walks, i walk the other direction!!!

Wow... over 1200 calories for a shake! I love hearing this because i think of all the things i ate in a day that added up to that one shake. Its insane, i can eat a lot of good healthy food in 1200 calories, or one bad shake. I always think, at the end of the day would i rather be full on a bunch of good food, or starving because of a Blizzard? It helps! Congrats!!!
  • Congrats!!

I've been finding it easier to say no whenever my husband brings home fast food. It's a great feeling since I always used to eat that crap!
  • huge accomplishment!! congrats
