2 drinking-related questions

  • Hello all,

I have two "drinking" questions to ask and I apologize if I haven't chosen the best place to post these:

    1) Do you limit your intake of diet drinks? (soda/lemonade/powder mixes)-any diet drinks that are low-calorie or calorie-free?
Should I have this as an eventual goal to "wean" off diet drinks?

    2) I drink a lot of water-tons of it. I have noticed that I am thirsty often. I have had tests done (by a physician) to check for any abnormalities (diabetes/kidney function, etc)...but I'm wondering if any of you who drink a lot of water experience the same thing? Is it true "the more you drink, the 'thirstier' your body becomes?" I've had several people tell me that and I'm wondering if any of you have that same experience.

    Thanks for your input!
  • Hello,
I don't see a problem with continuing to drink diet sodas, Crystal Light, or iced tea with sweetener as long as it is done in moderation and you still drink plenty of plain water. Having a diet soda now and then actually helps me in certain situations, such as when eating out at a restaurant, I sip on my diet soda to keep from eating the fatty mozzarella cheese sticks my husband always gets as an appetizer... It also helps me in the movie theatre to order a big diet soda and sip on it to avoid the mega buttered popcorn.
I have never had any bad effects from diet drinks...although if you are the type who is all natural, buys only organic produce, etc. you may not want to have the artificial sweeteners in these drinks-that is a personal choice.
I don't have the urge to drink constantly like you do, except on days that I am really busy and have neglected drinking enough water throughout the day-then it tends to hit me right at bedtime how thirsty I am...wierd huh?
I hope your tests turn out alright, I know from it being in my family-and I was a gestational diabetic myself, that the urge to drink a lot is a symptom of diabetes, as well as the urge to eat sweets all of the time...but some of us have that without being diabetic-and that is why we are here!
    Have a good day!

  • I concur with Aphil on this. Some folks have problems with diet sodas, or anything that is sweet-tasting (even if it has no calories) in that it might make them eat something they wouldn't normally eat, you know?

And I would also advise drinking LOTS of 'real water'. Here's what I do: Unless I'm dead tired in the morning, I do NOT drink diet Coke until I've had at least 2 liters of pure water.

I definitely think the more water you drink, the more your body craves it as well! So drink up - it's a good thing
  • Thanks for your responses....I do drink diet coke and diet lemonade. I've been trying to cut down some-but I do love it. I drink lots and lots of water. I had tests done and the doc said I was fine-and I still have my blood checked regularly, so I guess it's "just me." I think it must be true the more you drink, the more your body craves it. I drink just plain old ice water-very often. Thanks for your input!
  • Ya know, when I saw the topic title, I was all set with my dad's secret Mai Tai recipe...but I guess it will have to remain a family secret...oh well

You can have seltzer or sparkling water too - counts as water. I LOVE Schwepps seltzer, Pellegrino, and Calistoga Sparkling water with a wedge of lemon or lime! Nice to order when you're out - especially if you're eating at, say, a French or Continental restaurant (which I do frequently due to my business). Iced tea or diet Coke doesn't really 'go' well with that kind of cuisine, but sparkling water is always acceptable. Just FYI!
  • Ya know...I have a killer secret recipe for "Spiked Jello"...but I think we would need to start another thread...

  • you all are too funny!
I suppose if I want to appear debonair (notice I say "appear") the sparkling water will do it! You all will have me looking the part of a "hottie" yet!
