hey this is actually a fact- i have a very good friend who is about 6'9 used to be 350 + , and is now a 200 lb marathon runner, he has sent me to the link to studies, unfortunately i cannot fit them right now - coffee, and alcohol have this effect the most. especially when you are training for something- your body will hold on to water, especially if you are feeling dehydrated.
research wise, it's only up to 125 ml that acts like that, and notice that you gain back about half of what you lose the next day as your body holds on to a little water again.
i see it as a fishbowl effect- you want to change the water every once in a while lol
