Sushi & Wasabi Points

  • Hi Everyone!

I tried Sushi for the first time and LOVED it! While shopping at Meijer I came across a 6 roll pack in the deli area. When I figured out the points, it came out to 10 for the entire pack. Is that too high for only 6? Also, does Wasabi have a point value? I used very little on each piece.

Any ideas on where I can find sushi with a lower point value?
  • not sure about the points or the wasabi, but I know that sushi can be v high calorie, tho low in fat. The rice is cooked with vinegar and sugar to make it nice and sticky. I know I had a huge blood glucose spike after eating sushi once. Its a bit of a thing because my SIL family is Japanese and sushi is now a traditional part of all family gathers and holidays. I have to really watch myself. I usually stick to sashimi, (just the fish) and salad to avoid the spike.
SO yes, 10 points for 6 pieces makes sense to me.
  • the wasabi root and powder have point values so what you get in the restaurants do cause of the mixture. Just go to your local grocery store and pick one up and figure the pts.

I'm guessing you had a California roll. Those are high cause of the mayo.

THe sad thing about Sushi is places make rolls differently one place I go to now makes a spicy tuna way different than and ol place I used to go to. Thank goodness I don't like the new one cause I'm sure it's more points.

I usually just break the roll down in items and record it that way if I can't find it on WW .. and WW HAS nothing hardley for choices.
  • I'm a huge sushi fan, and have found a few nutritional places for sushi online. Or frankly, I just google "<sushi name> nutritional info". What I usually do is take the nutritional info that I find and calculate it into Points so that I'm better able to track.

10 Points for 6 pieces isn't unheard of... depending on the type. There are veggie rolls (like cucumber rolls) that are likely only 1 point a piece. Whereas there are certain rolls that are upwards of 3 points a piece (like Tempura Rolls: fried, breaded).

To reduce the number of points used on sushi, I'd suggest similar things to when someone goes to any restaurant. Avoid fried. Stay away from sauces. (Though, truthfully, most sushi rolls I come across don't have excess "sauce"... some eel rolls do.) If you're unsure how something is made... ask!

As an aside: If you like sushi from the deli, I highly suggest you find yourself a nice Sushi restaurant. There's nothing in this world like having a sushi chef prepare fresh sushi right in front of you. Melts in your mouth. The other reason I suggest finding a place, is that there are types of sushi made that I would never dare buy in a store pre-made.

If the first one you picked up was a California Roll, you might be interested to know that depending on where you go you might end up finding sushi with the nori (that's seaweed) wrapped on the outside. The inside-wrap of the California roll was first invented, because Americans had trouble dealing with seeing the nori on the outside!

I assure you, though, whether it's inside wrapped or outside traditionally... both are delicious.
