Upping Meds?

  • Hey everyone,

This isn't really weight loss related and I haven't posted here before but I have a question and need some advice with.

I've been on Prozac for 4 years to treat what used to be a serious eating disorder and anxiety. I'm on 20mg and that has worked well for me. Recently I've had a lot of stressful events...I'm in a long distance relationship since my boyfriend got a job in the US and I'm applying to grad schools in his city and in my city. Applying for grad school has been very stressful and I know where ever I get in I will have a tough year ahead of me as either I will move there or we will break up..or maybe keep doing long distance. I also fell and broke my foot and my tailbone over the holidays

SO my point is that my mood isn't necessarily bad..my life is just actually sucking a bit right now. Is this a good reason to up my meds

    Thanks!
  • In the end, as I'm sure others will tell you, you and your doctor can only make that decision. But my indicator is how I react to situations. You can be upset about your problems, but do you act like it's the end of the world? Are you still functional or is your motivation at a complete low? When I'm experiencing these things then I know my medication isn't working right. Because when it is, I react in more of a 'normal' way to events. I don't have crying spells. I can get up in the morning and get moving. But depression and anxiety manifests differently in different people although there are some common threads. If you're questioning it then I say you should definitely bring it up to your doctor for discussion.

    Good Luck!
  • Thanks aliasihaya - I asked a good friend of mine who suffered from depression in the past and she said something similar. She said my mood seemed pretty good to her. I am coping well, it's just a tough period in my life.
