Dieting with a cold?

  • Anyone have any advice on how to diet when you have a cold? I start craving heavier breakfasts and I frequently feel sapped of my energy until I eat something. I am definitely consuming a lot more with my cold. I can't tell if I am using it as an excuse to eat a lot or if my body really needs this stuff to heal.

    Thanks!
  • I would go ahead and have a heavier but still healthy breakfast (oatmeal and a pair of eggs, maybe?) and then eat a little lighter the rest of the day. You may want to go a little easier on the exercise intensity until you feel better, too, but don't cut it out completely - you don't want to lose that habit.
  • Lots of liquids can help you feel full and fight the dehydration that's often a problem with colds. I love to drink lots of hot tea when I'm sick. Green tea with lemon and maybe just a tiny bit of honey helps me feel so much better and keeps me from eating everything in the cupboards!
  • Starve a fever, feed a cold as they always say!

Drink LOADS of water - more than you usually would even if you don't feel thirsty. Just keep taking sips of it consistently throughout the day.

As for feeding the cold, don't eat junk food, but eat more if you feel like you have to. Eat plenty of healthy food, don't worry about calories when you're sick but don't use it as an excuse at the same time!
  • I am just getting over a nasty cold my lovely boyfriend decided to bring home for me to catch I dealt with it by eating more at breakfast and lunch and then having a protein shake and light dinner. I kept my calories relatively the same but I was 100 over on the first day. I continued working out but left intense exercise out. I still worked up a good sweat though

I hope you feel better soon!
  • When you're sick, especially with a cold, your body needs fuel to heal. Listen to your body. Don't over do it, but don't drastically restrict calories. Moderate exercise also often helps give your body just the right bit of "good stress" that it needs to kick out the virus that's infecting you.
  • As long as not nauseous, you should eat a bit more. Your immune system is revving up to fight the infection, which explains the increase hunger.

Surprisingly, exercising has not been shown to increase the infection. If you're not feeling too crummy, light exercise is still ok while your sick.
  • when you're sick, you need lots of vitamines. you have to take the burden of heavy foods off your body, so it can focus it's strenght onto healig and not processig food. this is why i would recommend you a nice vegetable soup, muesli with warm milk and tons of fruit. it's just my personal opiion, you kow what your body needs best, after all!
  • Thanks guys I know this was for another poster, but I feel a cold coming on and I wasn't sure what to do about it. But your tips were helpful!
