Are you the carrot, the egg or the coffee bean

  • I heard this a few days ago and it has really hit a chord with me, really changed my perspective on a LOT of things so I thought i would share it with you all.

A young woman walked into her mothers home after a long, stressful day at work. She spent the next hour complaining about her co-workers, the work load, the stress and everything that went wrong in her day. When she was done, her mother took her to the kitchen and put 3 pots of water on the stove to boil. In 1 she put a carrot, another an egg and in the last she put coffee beans.
After 15 minutes she asked her daughter "What do you see, what happened to the things in the pots?"
The daughter took a quick glance and replied "The carrot got mushy and broke down, the egg turned hard on the inside and the beans turned the water into coffee"
The mother then looked at her daughter and asked "Which one do you want to be? You can turn to mush like the carrot and fall apart, you can become hard on the inside like the egg or you can be the coffee beans and change how things are around you"

Really made me think about how I come at some situations.

I think i'll be the beans
  • I guess I better try harder to be the beans. I'm not usually the carrot, but boy, can I be the egg at times! Neat post. Thanks, Coondocks.

  • I'm definitely the carrot. I aspire to be the beans yet I'm not there. Funny how you can aspire to be something yet not do the work to get there. And the more you want it, the harder it is to make the changes to get it. I haven't figured out what the formula is yet, but hopefully some day I'll make good, strong coffee....hopefully.
  • Egg. I'm not mushy (unless it concerns a Pixar movie) and I don't really care about changing things around me.
  • I'm a carrot unfortunately but striving to be a coffee bean
  • Can I be a SOFT boiled egg?
But I have to admit if I were the egg, it would be scrambled!
  • I guess I am an egg. If things get tough, I become hard on the inside, but I want to change that.
  • This is awesome! I go between the carrot and the egg but learning to be more like a coffee bean! It's hard sometimes! Thanks!
  • Well I'd like to say I was the bean all the time, but that would be a lie.
Unfortunately, I am the egg most of the time..
Thank you for this post though! I will try harder at being a coffee bean.
  • I like that! Nice analogy!
