My daughters blood tests were inconclusive

  • The endo said that her insulin was high-normal, but the hormones were all well within normal range except for prolactin, which was too low. The FSH:LSH ratio was fine this time, too, which was one reason the other doctor diagnosed her with PCOS. Because my daughter has no classic symptoms (i.e., she's not overweight and doesn't have an excess hair problem) except for missed periods (up to five months at a time), and because it runs in families and her half sister has classic symptoms, the endo can't be sure if my daughter does or doesn't have PCOS.

So, my daughter is going back on birth control to regulate her periods, using the patch this time. In three months, the endo will revisit where my daughter is at.

What a roller coaster for a teenager! First to be told she has something that may limit her ability to have children, then to be told that maybe she doesn't. However, the irregular periods do affect fertility, from what the endo said.
  • Sheila,

How frustrating! In my experience w/PCOS, I have found that there seems to be changes in hormone levels, depending what's going on with your body (i.e. weight loss/gain, stress levels, etc...). Her Dr. (or you or your daughter) may want to do the bloodwork again in 3 mths....

At one point in time, for me, my cortisol level was very low, at another, very high. The Dr. thought I might have Cushings Syndrome(thank God, the next blood test confirmed I didn't!)

As far as fertility, many women w/PCOS have babies with or without fertility drugs. I have had 2 kids without fertility drugs !

    Best wishes,

  • My blood test were in normal range too!
Did he do an ultrasound to look for cysts? I have the cysts on my ovaries, irregular periods, hirtuism, weight gain, and alot of others. I was birth control for many years and about a year after being off them I started to get the "classic symptoms" ex. hirtuism, weight gain etc. BC will mask pcos symptoms and is usually not recommended for people with PCOS. Just my .02 cents.
