I'm new and ready to rock. Tried nearly every diet out there but after beating breast cancer this last year with a mastectomy, chemo and treatments, I am ready to get my health back. What a great site!

Welcome! This is a great site for support and encouragement. Yogi Berra once said, "Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical." I believe the same is true of "dieting." Once you get the 90% mental part under control, the "other half" is easy. I guess this means we give 140% to the process! Maybe Yogi was correct in his math after all!

You beat cancer - now it's time to beat the weight. I can only imagine the weight part is the easier battle. Good luck to you and congratulations on being on the winning side of the cancer fight.

Thanks everyone...problem is I have no idea how to start. I'm a chronic dieter -what is everyone here doing that is really helping you? I'd like to start P90X (I have four kids and the gym is really hard with everyone's schedules) but I can do things from home - as for eating...sigh...help???

I cut out all junk food, cut back on potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread, and kept to about 1400 calories per day. I loaded up on veggies and fruit. I've kept lean protein servings to about 4 ounces per lunch and supper. Eat what you probably already know to be the "right" things. Or find a set plan like WW, SB, Atkins, Dukan, or any other you feel you can stick with.

You have to stop thinking of this as a diet. It is how healthy people eat. You've given no information regarding how old you are, much you weigh, how tall you are, how much you want to lose, etc. It might help to compare yourself - as a guideline only since we are all different - to someone in similar circumstances to start and see what is possible.

You'll get advice and encouragement here, but no one can do this but you. If you want to make a change, just make the change. It isn't easy. But being heavy isn't easy, either. Decide what you want more - better health or poor eating habits, and then do what you have to and jump in with both feet and have a go at it. You can do this. All of us in here are proof it can be done.

For me, I felt I didn't have a lot of time for exercise when I began my journey either...I chose calorie counting and tried to get more active (mostly in the form of walks or making extra trips up and down the stairs). Only in the last few months I've been getting a lot more serious about exercise. So a lot of it can be done just with getting your diet under control, so if you feel like you don't have time for a rigorous exercise routine, I would start there and just try to be mindful of being more active.

I do calorie counting and lots of exercising ! Just be accountiable to the scales ,for me once a week. That is what I call keeping score ! When the scales do not go down, then you know you must do better than what you were doing. You will learn what makes your numbers go up and what triggers you to eat the wrong food. You will learn how to control the bad habiits. Having to much sodium, late night eating, not drinking enough water , etc. Good Luck !

Congrats on beating cancer!! I am using dailyburn. com to track calories and workouts. The food database is the most comprehensive one I've ever encountered. I keep calories in the 12-1400 range. Psychologically, I haven't eliminated anything from my diet but I know that a brownie, for example, is going to gobble up a good chunk of my calorie day... this approach has really helped me stay sane and honestly, I don't want the 'bad' stuff. If I want a bit, i just count it and work around it. Small steps and good luck!
