Weighing cooked meat

  • There are times when I roast a chicken or like tonight when my husband made a skirt steak and couldn't cut it in advance for me to weigh it.

    So, how much of cooked protein equals the amount we're able to eat?
  • Can't you weigh the whole steak before then the whole steak after? Then you can determine the percentage of lost weight in the whole steak and take some off of your piece.
  • That's a great question rainbowmom. I was told it was ok to weight my meat after it was cooked. Was that incorrect information?
  • I weigh after it's cooked, took me a few times with different meats to get a rough estimate but I still weigh my meats. I trim what I think is about 8oz (my current amount on IP) and then add more or less to bring me to the recommended amount.
  • I was told that we need to weigh our meat raw and not cooked, it was the first question I asked my coach. I have hesitated cooking a roast for this reason. I have a two compartment crock pot so I even thought about measuring mine and putting it on the smaller side. Depending on the quality of your roast it's avg 2-3 oz lighter after it's cooked. I would personally have 6 oz of cooked roast as some of it will be juice as well.
  • I have never weighed my meat - I eat a palm sized portion and figure that's about the right portion. I was on WW for years and that's how they taught me to eyeball a 4-6 oz portion of meat. Right or wrong, somehow it works for me.
  • I usually take off 2 oz from the cooked -- so last night I ate 6 oz of flank steak. Same with a roasted chicken. I was just wondering what others do.

  • I was told to weigh after you cooked the meat. That is all I have done...except for cooking ground meat..then I weigh it before and cook it.
  • I always thought that we need to weigh the meat after it is cooked! This is getting so confusing now !

  • its suppose to be before its cooked and take off 2 ozs after its cook if you can't measure it before. At least that is what my coach told me, every coach is different as we already know. Whatever works for you, like what Stolaf does, it works for her so no reason to change it.
  • I was weighing cooked. Now I don't weigh at all most of the time and eat more than I did when I was weighing it because I was told I wasn't eating enough. Sometimes if I have a question I will but not often.

    This. When you can't weigh, just use good judgment and your palm. This was even on Dr. Oz yesterday.
  • I was told to weight first but sometimes i make salmon from frozen so i can't so i just weight it after. I don't the 1-2oz difference in protein would affect the diet very much.
