Muscle?

  • Has anyone had their lean body mass tested before starting ideal protein and after starting or at goal? I am hoping to find reassurance that we are losing fat and not muscle. I don't put a lot of faith in the "experts" who try to convence us that low carb diets are the debil but, they seem convinced that high protein diets cause us to lose muscle, liver, kidneys, etc. Again, I don't think they have all of they answers or the "burn more calories than you take in" would work, right. They clearly don't have the answers.

    What say you?
  • I had it tested on my first consultaiton and on occasional weigh in's. I've only had four weigh-ins but the chiropractor who runs the clinic I go to says they monitor lean muscle mass to make sure you aren't losing it.
  • I have maintained my muscle mass and lost fat. I work out a lot...
  • I can tell I've lost muscle. Mostly in my shoulders and my calves. They just look odd and the muscles are softer than usual.

I read a little about it and the info suggests that repaired muscle full of glucose (glucogen, whatever it was called), along with the binding water, is a firmer, more enery resilient muscle.

How I interpreted it is that right mow my muscles are a bit depleted, but the tissue is still there. Once I move in to phase 4 and the stores replenish, my muscle mass will bounce back.

We'll see. I hope so. I don't like my skin feeling loose and the muscles squishy even when I flex them.
  • Mine was and is tested. I work out 3 to 4 days a week and have gained muscle while doing IP and lost fat so it seems like the perfect combination to me.
  • Thank you! I am going tomorrow. My biggest concerns were losing muscle or hair and keeping it off. Because of this forum I am confident and moving forward. I want to atleast keep my muscle and prefer to build.
  • I just found this, but thought I would comment anyway. I got my BF tested at my gym, with callipers, so it is fairly accurate.

I initially got tested at 167# and just got retested at 145#. I lost 22 pounds total between testings, of those 22#, 19 of them were from fat and 3 were from muscle. The woman who tested me said it is nearly impossible to lose weight and not lose SOME muscle. But the fact that I lost so much more fat than muscle, speaks volumes about IP. I can't remember exactly why she said that it was that way, just that she said it. She was extremely happy with the fact that I lost so much weight and hardly any muscle. And I lost 6.3% total body fat.
  • Thank you, Jennydoodle. I am so glad to hear that. Congratulations on your loss!
