  • Hello,
I am new to this site and new to the Ideal Protein Diet too. I am a vegetarian and finding the protein intake for meal is my biggest problem. I am OK with the veggies part, but finding Franklin Farms or any of the other stuff listed in IP Protein is becoming my biggest problem.

So I bought these Organic soy burgers from Trader's Joe today. My problem though is that one patty is 170 calories. Is this OK? Plus Fat Cal. is 110 g and Sat fat is 1.5 g.

Is this OK? I am not sure. Everything else available at TJ's or Safeway has wheat etc (the prohibited stuff). Please help.
  • There are a few vegetarian's on the boards....do a search, I know longdivision and Watkat are both vegetarians.
  • Thanks a lot!!!
  • If you can..get Yves veggie burgers..they are 120 calories 5 carbs and 10 grams of protein..and they taste great!
  • Do you know of any place / store (physical or online) that carries them. I have been driving crazy trying to find the burgers unsuccessfully
  • This is what Longdivision sent to me:
    We can have the following:
    smart dogs
    veggie burgers
    non-breaded soy chicken
    seitan
    tofu
    morning star bacon

there are tons of meat alternatives (boca, morning star, quorn, etc.) that you can eat. most are pretty high in protein. just try to keep your servings under 5 net carbs and watch out for sugars in the ingredients. always read the labels and stick to the serving sizes on the box.

Almost all grocery stores, walmarts, costcos carry these.
    Some are available online.
  • Thanks!!!

  • The one thing you want to pay attention to is the amount of protein. 8 oz of meat is about 30-40g protein - so in order to make sure you're getting the right amount of protein just increase your servings accordingly.
  • My coach told me on the days I don't want to eat meat I can have a fourth packet instead - she has a few vegetarians on the program that do four packets a day and no protein meal. I also find this handy on my day when I work 2 jobs - I just have an RTD or bar. But you still need to have the 4 cups of veggies.

That's not enough protein though. The IP products are between 15 and 18g protein each. We are supposed to have 3 of them per day PLUS 30-40g dinner protein. You'd have to have at least 2 extra packets to be eating enough protein to match a dinner.

WOW REALLY?? She told me she has a couple of ladies on 4 packets a day. I had no idea.

Oh there are definitely folks who use four packets a day - but that's in ADDITION to the dinner protein, not in place of. I think IPDivaJen was on 4 all the way through.
  • I've read on this site to substitute two packets for dinner too (for Vegetarians and others). As Scorbett said, dinner protein needs to be 30-40g. I don't always get that at dinner, but I make sure i make up for it with egg whites, etc. at other times during the day.
  • Starshine 72 is currently looking at vegetarian sources, too.

I continue to work with my coach on making IP work without meat in maintenance, but do this for Phase 1:

Basically, keep dinner at around 30 to 40g of protein. If the carbs go to 15g then don't have a restricted that day. I always used total carbs as my guide, but now know it is NET (total carbs minus fiber carbs).

You can use a combination of products to do this: TWO IP packets; egg whites & "fake meat"; two different kinds of "fake meat (a burger & a chick'n cutlet); etc.

Here is a spreadsheet with the calories, nutrition and ingredient list of stuff I use. This is stuff I can buy at SuperTarget & the local Kroger chain.

Honestly, as long as the sugar in a product didn't show up as 1g of sugar in a serving, I didn't worry about it. Curiously, if I had beefless tips, it always showed up on the scale; I considered them an occasional food, once a week or less.
I can't honestly say if I would have lost quicker eating meat. I lost more in the 2 to 3 lb/week range. Oh, and just throw away the sauce packets until maintenance (and even then...)

IP makes you become the kind of vegetarian that actually eats vegetables. ; )
