Thinking about joining?

  • I went to my first TOPs meeting last week. I just observed. I liked what I saw but I was a little disappointed. It was all ladies much older then me. I was hoping to meet some ladies my age. I just turned 30. I have to say they were really nice but I am just at such a different point in my life. I think I will try another group that meets at the same time. I fear I am going to find the same thing. I also was disappointed that there was in real direction or ideas to start weight loss? I want a group that discussed this kind of stuff. I can't afford weight watchers. What do you think?
  • My group also is mostly older women. I like them they are very nice. Even though we are different ages they are friendly and we chat. Also, everyone is there for the same reason, to lose weight so we all have something in common. I go because getting weighed helps and if I didn't I wouldn't lose. The price is very reasonable. I follow the WW points system and use that to help me. If you want to discuss certain topics, ask the leader if she can address them.

    Good luck.
  • Hi losinginilliois,

I think that I would visit some other chapters. Some chapters are more active than others and you may find one that has more people your age.
TOPS doesn't have their own weight loss program, however, they do recommend the exchange diet. You are free to use whatever diet you and your doctor agree on.
Some members have been in TOPS for years and don't realize that newcomers need to hear about losing weight and need help getting started. Talk to the leader and see if she can get someone to help you get started. Sort of a pal for a few weeks.
TOPS is an excellent organization. You just have to find the chapter that is right for you.
Also, I think that as you attend the meetings you will hear more and more programs on nutrition, serving portions, health issues, etc. We always try to have a good program.

    Hope this helps some.

  • I'm also a TOPS leader. I agree with FLgal. You have to look around and find something that fits you. There is also a web site that you can join online. I think it is only $20.00 (?) I don't belong to it because we have an at-work meeting I go to weekly. If you work try getting your own meeting together with the people you work with. TOPS is a great organization, and best of all it is non-profit. You will make great friends old or young. If you would like more information go to TOPS.org
