Flaxseeds...YUCK!

  • So this morning I decided to add flaxseeds to my oatmeal. I eat steelcut oatmeal, from Trader Joes, a few times a week and add raspberries or some other fruit to it for an extra kick. Unfortunately, this morning, I found myself gagging after every bite. It's possible that I added too much based on the serving of oatmeal but I still find the taste and smell of the seeds quite unsettling.
I don't want to miss out on the health benefits of these powerful little seeds but I absolutely cannot go through what I went through this morning.

    Happy Monday all!
  • Did you grind up the flaxseeds or use flaxseed meal? The seeds themselves pass through your system undissolved and without any particular benefit to your body..

I use ground flaxseeds on my steelcut oatmeal with absolutely no problem at all.
  • I second buying ground flaxseeds. Whole seeds just provide some extra fiber for you . Also, TJ's sells a great dried blueberry flaxseed blend. Tastes yummy and you still get most of the benefits. I say "most" because the seeds in that particular mix are not raw.
  • Aw man, you mean to tell me I suffered through that meal for nothing!?

This is the kind that I purchased (http://cgi.ebay.com/Trader-Joe-s-Gol...#ht_5663wt_905)
so I'm guessing I may have a different experience if I grind them up?
  • I buy whole flax seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder. I'm not a huge fan of the taste, but at just a tablespoon or so I generally don't notice it when I add it to oatmeal, yogurt, etc.
  • If you're into them just for nutritional value, I just take flax seed oil pills!
  • I've ground them up in the coffee grinder and put into baked goods like pumpkin bread or into shakes. But experiment -- it is possible you used too much for that amount of oatmeal.

    A.
  • I got a flax seed hand grinder from King Arthur flour.com
  • Thanks all..I'm gonna give it another try.
