Hair loss and PCOS

  • Hi, just wanted to ask if anyone else has had hair loss due to their PCOS? My hair has always been fine in texture but over the last year its thinned out majorly. I saw my doctor about and they've given me some tablets to see if we can deal with it. But they said it could take months. And to be honest its realy starting to get me down. Would love some comments and advice.

    Thanks
  • I don't have thin hair, so it's not exactly the same situation because I still have a lot of hair, but I do think the PCOS has thinned out some of it.

I've read part of the problem is the excess testosterone because it gives us similar patterns as men (balding!!!!).

Another reason to keep PCOS under control.
  • My hair used to be so thick you could literally get lost in it, but it has thinned out in the last couple years as well. My doctor couldn't figure it out cos my hormone levels didn't seem to be the cause. I worry every single day that I'll get bald spots eventually. *shudders*
  • Yep -- I've gotten thinner on top. I don't worry about it though. I figure if I get my hormones in balance the rest will deal with itself.

So I'm more into the weight and the menses than the acne or hair.

  • I had hair loss along my front and back hairline (so like where men recede in front and then along my neck). After losing some weight but more importantly after eating low carb for a decent amount of time it started growing back. The rest of my hair is almost waist length so the 4-6 inch of hair growth back still looks kinda silly but I'm very happy it's there!

*Edited to add* I've never taken/used anything for hair growth nor been on Metformin or anything similar.
  • Thinning hair was what first alerted me to having a problem before being diagnosed with PCOS. I keep it under control with the Ginet-84 contraceptive pill (might go by a different name in other countries). My hair stopped falling out within a few days and most of it has grown back. It also slowed down the growth on my chin.
  • I have had this problem. When I was 17 my hair thinned out dramatically and then fell out in "patches". I had maybe 10 bald patches covering my head. It was too hard to hide in the end so I ended up getting a wig. The hair loss only lasted for 2 years and I am 22 now and my hair is thick and healthy.
  • I have the same problem with hair loss. I had to cut it real short to make it look a little thicker and to take off some of its weight since for me the lighter it is the less it falls out.
I tried several medications, tonics, shampoos, scalp massages but no tangible results.
What I do now is make sure its clean, I try not to brush it so much and I never color it because that also adds to the problem.
When I have to dress up for occasions/weddings etc I use clip in extensions that match my hair color. They look natural and work very well.
Since my major problem is on the front part of my head, I like to use these clip in bangs. Saves time and you don't have to blow dry/cut your own hair.

    Good luck
  • I am having a severe issue with hair loss. I had attributed it to PCOS, and had hoped that a recent change in my PCOS would stop my hair from falling out. I've been regular (since June) without medication for the first time in my life. I can't take metformin or birth control because of heart issues, so it was a blessing that at least my menstration was normal. I haven't seen any changes in less chin hair growth or a slow in my hair loss. I've tried all the lotions and supplements people recommend and nothing has helped with the hair loss, so I'm feeling hopeless. I have one hair style that hides most of the baldness, but the hair at the top/front is still thinning so even that hairstyle will soon not hide everything. I don't know what to do. I'm not being treated for my PCOS because there are no specialists near my hometown. I've been thinking about going to a doctor about my hair loss, but would a general practitioner be any help?
  • Yes hairloss is a big issue for me right now. For the past year I am shedding SO much hair, way more than normal. I have thin textured hair but have always had a lot of it. I've been complimented my whole life at how much hair I have! Now the one thing I've always been proud of is going away I am scared I will find a bald spot soon.
I am also struggling with really bad hormonal acne on my upper body as well as a ton of new skin tags popping up.
Despite a 20lb weight loss from my heaviest symptoms aren't easing up yet.
  • I read somewhere that there is a link between Vit B deficiency and PCOS, especially if you are on metformin. I noticed my hair started shedding, but it slowed down after I started taking sub-lingual Vit B.
  • I am having the same problem. My doctor prescribed Dermavits for me and said as well that it could take months. In the meantime, I'm just trying to deal with it and be gentle with my hair. I'm on South Beach and I'm hoping that once I lose weight, I'll be able to regulate everything and my hair will go back to normal. But sometimes I feel like I'm just hoping and praying and there is a chance it won't happen
  • I used to have scary thinning hair... but then I increased my intake of animal products and went low carb/grain-free and it's growing back, thick and shiny.

    Really animal products?
What is considered an animal product? My hair has been falling out consistently and nothing seems to be helping. It's very thin and fine and depresses me so much....I have an appt with a dermatologist tomm, I'm hoping it will help...
