My fiance is a Federal Tranportation Security Officer (TSO at the airport) and says that it should not set off the metal detector and it will not show up on the AIT (the imager). He has never had that situation come up and he has work for them for years.
Artifical Hips and knees will set it off but a lapband never has.
We all struggle...sometimes it's easier, other times more challenging. You are not alone! Post surgery life is difficult even on a good day but we can try to view those challenges as daily turning points. Like my signature says, the glass of water (post-op WLS) is what it is, it is our perception that tells us whether or not its positive or negative...it really is a choice we make on a daily basis.
Martin Luther King said something similar to this....
If you can't run, walk....if you can't walk, crawl...if you can't crawl, sit down, take a break then get up and go again!
I've got 1600 LapBand patients and can confidently say it won't set off the detector at the airport. I was a little worried about MRI machines, but the company that makes the band said they are safe within 48 hours of placement (which was good news for an MRI technician who wanted the band placed). Hope that helps!
I had my surgery over 8 years ago. Over the past 3 years all Airports I have traveled through have put in the full body scanners, and my experiences have been quite humiliating even though I advised them of my medical port. My port shows up on my screening everytime which means a full body pat down everytime and TSA has gotten uncomfortably invasive by putting their hand down your pants very embarrassing humiliating and makes me feel horribly anxious and less than human everytime I fly. I called my surgeon for documentation.
