My TJ's now carries cleaned and chopped kale

  • I know TJ's carries different stock at different locations, and they can be priced differently too. I have long been a fan of the prewashed "southern greens" blend, which is always available at my TJ's for approximately 3.99 per package. I buy it and freeze it, because when I cook it the fact that it has been frozen does not affect the cooked texture or flavor. However, I do find that it's a bit pricey for a vegetable for basically one meal for two people.

This week, my TJ's started carrying prewashed, cleaned and cut kale for $2.29 per 10 oz. package. I was thrilled - it seems to freeze well too and I'm excited to use it in stir frys. Probably can't use it in salads, but if I flash fry it and mix with fresh cukes and sliced carrots and Zeff's peanut dressing I think it could be a good lunch option. Just wanted to share my find. For a dinner, I plan to sautee along with TJ's chicken mango sausage for a delish sweet/savory entree.
  • Matilda, I buy the prewashed, chopped kale and use it in this salad -

Kale is veggie I've had a hard time learning to like, but I really like it prepared this way. This salad is wonderful!
  • Yum! I bet it would be good with raisins too. I assume the currants are fresh.
  • Oh cottage, you make me feel better... I haven't learned to like kale much either! I'll have to check out that recipe!
  • Good news - our TJs is due to open mid-July. Finally

Bad news - I just tried kale chips for the first time and didn't like them. I had high expectations since I found I like most veggies roasted.
  • No problem, WaistingTime - more for us!
  • The chain grocery stores around here already carry chopped & washed greens in a bag. They always have kale and collards & often the mustard & turnip greens as well. They're from Glory Foods:

I'll have to price them, but it's quite a big bag & I think pretty much priced like Trader Joe's.

I use the boxed Sun*Maid Zante Currants. You could use raisins, but I like the smaller currants in it. Dried cranberries would be good in it, too.
  • Waisting Time,
Are you in the KC area? MY TJ's is opening July 15 as well That place is going to be crazy crowded until people get used to it!
  • I just found prewashed/chopped kale as well and was so happy!
