What to do when you have a cold?

  • I woke up this morning with the dreaded scratchy throat as well as a dry hacky cough. Plus a headache and absolutely zero energy. Oh crap....it's a cold!

Does anyone find that having a cold affects their usual routine? I know that normally, when I'm sick, I drink a lot of orange juice...but I haven't had a drop of any kind of fruit juice since I started trying to lose weight in January. I only drink water now, with a very occasional glass of diet 7-Up.

So I guess I'm just looking for any suggestions that might keep this cold from totally sabotaging my efforts.
  • When I'm sick I only want carbs. I personally just give in within means. If you are seriously craving orange juice have a glass.

Last time I was sick I had chicken noodle soup and 7 up even though I cut most carbs and I was fine- no drastic weight gain.
  • I keep Sambucol in the house for when I come down with a cold. If I take it within a couple of hours of the first symptoms, the cold goes away.
But I have to take it for 2 more days or the cold will return.
So I never get real sick anymore.

If you search for Sambucol in the internet you will find a lot of good info on it.
It is sold over the counter in drug stores and does not need a prescription.
It is a newer med made in Israel.

You can also buy it from online stores for about half of what the drug stores sell it for.

And I grow giant mullein and make tea from the dried leaves. It stops a cold dead in its tracks also. It is an ancient remedy for colds and flu.
You can buy Mullein tea in the internet also. You must filter the tea through a coffee filter to remove tiny barbs on the leaves, or you will get a throat irritation. It is a mild, sweet green tea, so I don't have to add any sugar to it.

Why go through days and days of suffering, or watch your kids suffer, if you can stop the illness in a few hours with tea and elderberry extract (sambucol).
Some of these simple old remedies can be lifesaving.
  • Ick! It's definitely been going around in my office too, so I'm trying to stay as far away from people as I can Not easy when I work front desk and basically come in contact with all my coworkers and then some!

See if you can pick up some zinc tablets OTC - they do wonders at cutting the duration of a cold down to a day or two for me. Drink lots of water and REST! Put the gym and working out on hold for a while so your body can recover - give yourself a couple of days even after you think you're okay to ensure you dont push yourself before your body is ready.

    Feel better soon
  • Thank you all for the comments! I picked up some zinc tablets at the drugstore this morning along with my Robitussin and throat drops, so hopefully between it all, my cold will disappear (relatively) quickly. I think I caught it in time; I didn't feel any symptoms until this morning (although my mother says she heard it in my voice when we talked on the phone last night, haha.)

And I definitely don't intend to work out for the next couple of days; the weather isn't going to be conducive to that anyway (rainy and cold). I'll just focus on getting better so I can get right back at it once I'm 100% better.
  • I stayed on my regular food program the last cold that I had. I think I sat out from working out for two days... I went back as soon as I started feeling better although I wasn't 100%.
  • I'm just getting over some nasty virus, probably was just a cold, but man, did I feel BAD for a couple days. Like could not function! In and out of shivers and sweats, head so stopped up I couldn't breathe, sore, sore throat. I ate right along on plan as usual. I'm really trying to hammer in to my own head that the way I eat now is the way I eat now. I eat this way if I'm sick, if I'm well, if someone has a baby, if someone dies, if it's cold, wet, dry, sunny. If I win the lottery, if I lose my job.

That said, my WOE allows for some leeway, so a glass of OJ if it will make me feel better is not off limits. Diving into my daughter's Easter basket because I'm feeling stuffy, miserable, and sad, IS.

Hope you nipped it in the bud and won't be out of commission like I was. I hadn't been sick in a long time, and it's NOT been fun! Take care!!
