Moderately obese?

  • ....
  • I think it depends on where you look. Although I've never seen the term moderately obese, I have seen obesity grade I, grade II and grade III, for BMIs of > 30, >35, and >40. You're currently in grade II, but just a few decimal points from grade one. Other places just have one category of 30-40, and another 40 and above.
  • You are doing so well... Do not get discouraged by a word.
  • The only labels I've ever heard were overweight, obese for over 30, morbid for over 40, and super morbid for over 50. I don't think it really matters anyway. You're doing well and you'll be under that 35 soon.
  • I don't use the "O" word at all. I hate it. Moderately fluffy works for me!
  • Quote: I was talking about my BMI with a friend today. Last time I checked my BMI I weighed 304 (my highest recorded weight) and I was morbidly obese at 46.2. When I checked it this time I 35.4 which I thought meant just obese. My friend told me I'm actually moderately obese, which is the second stage of obesity. Now I'm all confused and a little disheartened.

Do any of you chicks use the term moderately obese or do you just say obese? I was just saying obese but now I feel like I should use the term moderately as well.
In what context are you saying "obese" at all? I mean, I have been obese since before I started this process, and I suppose in some technical sense I still am, but can't think of many occasions where I've had a need to say it, much less worry about what modifier to put on it.

Anyway, don't be disheartened. It's not as if reading the definition of the stages made you suddenly shoot up 30 pounds. You - your body - is what it is, whether you call it "obese" or "plump" or "narglefraxel".
  • Congrats for leaving morbid obesity in the toilet where it belongs.

    Onward and downward!
  • I'm Obese Type 1 and I didn't even realise. It's an awful word, but just strive for a healthy living and happiness. I agree completely with DrivenByAmbition - don't let a word get you down or define you!
