Lean Ground Turkey Breast - Good or Bad?

  • Hi all,
I recently bought 1.5 lean ground turkey breast from whole foods, not pre packaged. They told me is was very lean but didn't give me a percentage. Buying ground turkey is new to me and I'm nt sure how healthy it is. I made about 15 turkey meatballs (used ginger, garlic, green onions, cilantro, parsley, one tbsp Braggs amino acid and one egg). They weigh about 30-35g each. Calorie king has 35g as 46 calories. I'd like to know I eating two of these a day (one at Bfast one at lunch) is ok and if it's healthier to get fresh roasted turkey instead. I figured I could control the sodium in ground turkey since I can't with deli turkey.

Anyone think lean ground turkey breast is a bad idea the way I'm eating it?
  • As long as you're sure it turkey BREAST then it's a great choice. Some ground turkey is dark meat, or a mix of dark and light, so the fat content can get up there. But honestly, I'm more worried about sodium than fat most of the time, so I think I am going to steal your idea. Did you find that it got dried out when you cooked it?
  • How do you find the liquid aminos?

I did a side by side nutrition data comparison and found you save more sodium by using low sodium soy sauce and other stats are comparable
... are there other benefits i'm just not seeing?
  • Juliana-
Thank you for your response!! I'm a new poultry eater I've always been a vegetarian but was having weird moments where I would feel like I was going to black out. I cut out a lot fruit and now just do berries and replaced the rest with turkey and/or eggs. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure if the meatballs would seem dry to you but they seem pretty darn good to me. I also eat them throughout the week about two a day and they are just as goo as when out of the oven.

Here is the recipe. I skip the Panko crumbs and salt and just use the Braggs, I even do 1/2 a tbsp and just add more garlic for flavor.
I also don't make the sauce but it sounds so good.

The butcher swore it was very lean and I only buy turkey breast.
