Sodium...I hate you.

  • I can't tell if I'm super sensitive to sodium or if my weight spikes because it's too much.

I never add salt to my food. I never add any condiments with salt to my food. Nothing I eat comes from a package, box, or bag. Basically nothing processed and no meat which

However I went out to eat yesterday twice (out of town) and this morning I was up 2lbs. For lunch I had a small salad which had asparagus, apple and roasted hazelnuts. I shared it with my boyfriend. The dressing was lemon, olive oil seasoned with salt and pepper.

For dinner I had a macrobiotic plate with black beans (only ate a few bites of this), kale, pickled sauerkraut, pickled seaweed, quinoa and broccoli. I'm pretty sure there was salt on it when I got it. Is it possible that the pickled sauerkraut and seaweed had a lot of salt? Or did I really gain even though I ate pretty healthy food (didn't go over 1200 for the day).

Do you guys also spike up when you go out to eat? I keep telling myself it's salt but I want to be positive. So tell me feathers, does this happen to you?
  • Oh definatly. ANY time i go out to dinner even if I stay within my calories i somehow manage to go up like 2lbs and stay there for dayssss. I also never add salt to anything. Super frustrating I know how you feel.
  • Ummmm - anything that is pickled gets that way by being soaked in salt water or vinegar, so its highly likely that was the culprit!
  • I know it's so obvious especially with stuff being pickled but it's still so hard to trust that it's just that simple. Losing weight is a total mind game and I'm always losing! Thanks for cheering me up you two!
  • Let me cheer you up as well: I recently had a totally mysterious 2 lb. pop up in my weight, and I think now that it was TOTALLY due to indulging in diet soda for a couple of days, which I've been trying to avoid. Even that uptick in sodium resulted in bloat.

Here's my new thing: if I know I'll be eating at a restaurant, I'll just order iced tea and water to drink, and then I make sure to drink a LOT of water when I get home as well as all day the next day. Seems to be working to balance out sodium bloat.
  • don't worry, it was most likely the pickled things and sauerkraut. pickled anything = LOTS of salt, regardless of how healthy it is un-pickled. i have a tolerance to salt but recently realized that when i eat mt. olive's pickles sweetened with splenda, the following day i am up at least 4 lbs on the scale. i was shocked the first time it happened then figured it was the pickles. a few weeks ago i had a pickle craving again and had two small ones of the aforementioned -- just two! -- and sure enough, up again. needless to say, i no longer have them and will be switching to a different brand, because usually i don't react this way to pickles.
