  • Hello, chickies!

Well, Sunday morning saw me getting up at 4:30 a.m. to make the hour drive into Atlanta to run the Georgia Half Marathon. Last year I did the race and it was my first 'big' event so I was excited to run it again and compare how I felt and hopefully get a better finish time!

The race began at 7am but it took about 10 minutes for my start corral to make it up to the start line. (About 18,000 people run the event, which includes a full marathon and half marathon) My running buddy and I were able to maintain a good, steady pace throughout, stopping every 14 minutes for a 1 minute walk (less than 10 minutes walking total). It was a great, somewhat hilly course and the weather was perfect, cool and cloudy (once the sun came up).

When we ran this race last year, I was exactly 50 lbs heavier and had an injury with my hip which slowed me down. I finished in 3:03. This year I was hoping to finish in 2:20 although I would have been happy with anything under 2:30. I was overjoyed when I saw that we finished in 2:12! We kept a 10-minute mile pace for 13.1 miles.

And the best part (well, one of them) is that I didn't have any pain issues afterwards. My quad muscles were a little tight today but nothing major.

I've already got two more half marathons planned for this year and will be doing this race again in 2012!

Here's a photo comparison of me from the morning of last year's race and this year's. And a pic of the newest medal in my growing collection.

  • That is amazing! I have been thinking about training for a 1/2...I'm not much of a runner though...you are my inspiration!
  • Way to go! What a great example you are. Good work
  • Wow, congratulations!!! You look awesome! I do envy you for doing this. I am SO not a runner!
  • Congrats! That is an amazing accomplishment!
  • Congratulations!!! Good luck with your other marathons also!
  • Way to go! You look really good
  • You should be SO proud of yourself!! What an accomplishment!
  • Congratulations!!!

I can't wait until I run my first half marathon! For now I'm running my very first 5K April 16th and another on May 1st.

Did you train for the half? Yesterday I ran 5.08 miles and my legs are so sore today. I'm trying to work my way up to 13 miles, that way I can run the entire half marathon.
  • Congratulations! Fantastic time!
  • AWESOME! congrats! im planning on running a 5K in July so this is quite motivating!
  • You look fantastic! What an accomplishment!!!! You are so inspiring!
  • YAY! Awesome, great time and what a difference from last year! You are inspiring. I'm doing my first half May 22nd and I can't wait.
  • Thanks, everyone! I have signed up for the 2010 half with a projected finish time of 2:05 - have to keep raising that bar.

I definitely trained for this race. I set up a 12-week structured plan of alternating running days of hills, tempo and long runs, all of varying lengths (from 3 to 14 miles) with cross training, primarily cycling.

Good luck to everyone running or contemplating a 5K! I ran my first one in October 2009 and that is how I became hooked on running. Now I'm looking at doing a full marathon as a 40th birthday present to myself, ha!
  • Very very inspirational Litchick! Great work. I wish i could run, i just cant do it yet. Its funny... i step on the treadmill and i get the button up to where i can get a nice jog going, but i feel soooo...clumpy, i feel so heavy! That and i have to hold my boobs cause it just doesnt work out well lol.
