i'm having the so much fun and curiosity these months, now that spring is finally here. i have lots of trees and gardens in my yard. i don't know what anything is so it's really interesting to guess as things start sprouting.

we have this tree that is some sort of fruit tree. the fruit is orange. fleshy and soft, although hard to tell what the texture is when it's on the tree. no pits or large seeds inside. i think it might have some red or black seeds inside. found some inside an old fruit, but it's hard to know if it was seeds or just bug's eggs or something, because this fruit has been sitting on the ground all fall and winter. no leaves, still dormant. bark is kinda like crab apple http://www.duke.edu/~cwcook/trees/maan.html

so i thought it was a peach tree for months. then a persimmon, now maybe a crab apple lol. it's going to be interesting

Could it be a pomegranate ?

Pomegranates would be pretty hard on the outside, not so much fleshy and soft - although the red and black seeds leaned me in that direction too lol. Do you have a picture of the old fruit?

nope, there were only 3 or 4 'seeds'. also the tree has a reg. tree trunk on the bottom, pom. tree has split into different limbs on bottom.

i'm in Missouri, zone 6b i think. so i don't think it's a tropical tree. it would be hard to grow. it's not a newly planted tree either.

the bottom of the tree is hollowed, don't know if that makes a difference. prob. not. a lot of the branches are leaning over, some even touching the ground. so whatever it is, either the tree had a lot or it was really heavy. or both.

Peach trees have a pretty specific look. short trunk and long branches. Does the tree look like this:

well, it's much older than that one. and i took another look at it. the bark is smooth, which is unusual for an old tree. i say old, because it's a little taller than my 2 story house. the typical fruit tree is much shorter. like the one in the above picture.

it's also harder to tell what kind it's sopposed to look like, because it hasn't been pruned properly, so it's all lopsided and again, tall. i haven't seen any roots under it. i think the roots are the very deep and narrow kind.

If they're not very big, do you think they might be (what I know as) a Chinese plum or apple tree? The fruit is kind of small and orange-ish... the way a peach's coloring is and it only has a couple of seeds in it. Kids usually just pick them right off the trees and eat them.

Crab apple ?

it could be chinese plum like in the picture, but i did find a dried leaf on the tree. there were tons under the tree, but there's so many leaves in my yard it's hard to know which leaf goes with which tree. so the leaf is about as long as my pinky finger,maybe 2 inches wide. has small 'teeth' on the edges. the leaves in the picture were longer, and no teeth. also, i thought plums have small pits? do chinese plums have different seeds than american plums? i can't find any pictures.

img171.imageshack.us/i/misperoda6.jpg/sr=1 it really seems like it could be crab apple, persimmon or something we haven't thought of, but i can't seem to find a bark match. the bark is fairly smooth. the persimmon tree has ridges, the one in my yard has no ridges, i think.

How about a paw paw tree - Asimina triloba I think is its scientific name?

the yellow paw paw fruit does sound similar, but they are oval shaped with many seeds. the fruit in my yard was round like a peach or apple. i think i'll have to just wait and see what the blooms look like.
