What is your course of treatment?

  • I have had PCOS and IR for over 10 years now. I am just curious as to what course of treatment you all are on right now. My doctor has me on met which I dont really know if its working or not. I dont feel any different. I have been on it for a few months now. I was on Provera to stimulate my menses. Well, I have had the hardest time losing weight. Not kidding, I could gain 5 lbs by eating at a restaurant. I hate when I see tiny girls eat way more than I ever did and they are skinny!! The hair growth is awful. I have it on my face, arms and even on my chest!! Whats up with that?? I have acanthosis nigricans as well. So, I am just curious as to what you all are doing besides the weight loss.
  • I am on birth control to control the pain I feel and blood loss during my period. I was taking metformin once a day for a couple of months, but they took me off it because when I lost some weight the blood sugar improved. I have hair on my neck that I have to pluck out with tweezers. The doctor prescribed me some cream that had worked with previous patients, but I didn't get it filled because of the cost.
  • I decided I was going to change my entire relationship to food and health about a year and half ago.

I dumped my BCP that were giving me problems and I started eating whole unprocessed (as much as possible) foods.

I lost about 15 lbs with doing that. I put in exercise (cardio and weight training).

Then I stalled. I went to my endo and he wanted to put me on metformin, but I decided I wasn't ready to go down the pharmaceutical route yet.

So, I figured out a regimen of supplements that I wanted to take to help me control my IR.

I take those supplements, eat as unprocessed and low carb as possible, and I exercise about 7 hours a week.

So far, this has helped me lose weight (in total 32 lbs) and keep my periods regular.
  • At the this momemnt in time I'm taking yasmin birth control pills. prior to being on the pill my periods were coming often and heavy. i've been yasmin for 5 months now and my periods are a lot less heavy.

once i start losing weigh again and eating healthy i might consider going off of the pill but for now i'm sticking to the pill.

i was on metformin for a week. once i started taking it twice a day i was seriously sick so i stopped taking it.
  • I shouldnt say anything because I am lot really losing weight. Im attempting the south beach diet, take 2000mg of metformin (when i can)...Im also going to start the 30 day shred today...I admit it, Im lazy, I dont make time for exercise but I figure I could do 30 minutes a day!
  • I just had labs so the plan changed a bit.

Thyroid meds -- no change. Keep doing what I'm doing.

    PCOS / IR / Syndrome X:

Frustrated by lack of weight loss so given Met again (I'd controlled it with diet so came off it. But I haven't started taking it yet because new 1800 calorie benchmark seems to have gotten things moving again.

Also taking multivitamin daily, and a separate b12, and vit D since labs showed B & D low and before I was slacker about the mulit.

I am taking OrthoCylcen for lack of periods and general hormone stable -- because off it I'm WAY irregular, acne crazy, and kinda witchy.

Not worried about taking spiro for hairy chin -- find shaving easier.

I'm trying to earn a PALA as my carrot for regular exercise, and I had to take an attidude adjustment of "ANY exercise will do for now." I'm not at my former half marathon walking self and I may or may not get there any time soon, so getting all cranky about 5K schedules and 10K schedules not working with current life schedule was more depressing than motivating. I'd like to fit lifting back in, but for now... wii fit is my saviour each night!

    A.
  • For the last 3 years since I have been diagnosed I've been on the birth control pill Estrostep. When I first started on it I weighed 226lbs and quickly dropped to 214 after being on it for a while. Since then I slowly got down to 204lbs, but in the last 6 months or so I've gone back up to the 215 range.

Being on The Pill has helped a bit with the irregular periods, but that's about it. The crazy mood swings are better when I'm on The Pill, but they're still not "normal" by any means.

Willow324: Good luck with the 30 Day Shred! I did level 1 on Friday last week and my body is still sore today. Keep with it
  • I control my PCOS through diet (vegan, whole foods) and BC pills.

I was on metformin for about a month. I threw up all day long. That stuff was AWFUL. All my doctors (gyno, endo and PCP) were shocked and said they had never seen that type of reaction.
