While it certainly sounds frustrating, I'm interpreting it a little differently. My immediate thought was that it was similar to a smaller person complaining to a larger one about not being able to lose weight. We often don't take kindly to that, given their situation seems to be better than ours. Perhaps they were taking a complaint about your job the same way, given they interpret your situation as better than theirs?
Of course, I wasn't there, and it could be purely them trying to 1-up you in the misery department. I know a few of those, and boy are they difficult to get along with!
Edit: Thought I'd throw in an example. I was having a hard day at work last week, and my coworker thought the best way to cheer me up was to send me a slide show of sick/dying/starving children in Africa. Her thought was that we don't have it that bad, and really have no reason worry over trivial things. But honestly, it doesn't make me feel any better to now add worrying about starving children into the mix.
