So I used to just dump cereal in a bowl...

  • I would fill the bowl until it was full and pour in the milk and start scarfing it down and it was a calming, normal situation.

But I've noticed that as I've been measuring my foods and things I've gotten...weird?

I measured my 2/3 cup Trader Joe's fiber cereal 4 times yesterday. Yes, 4 times. It seemed like waaay too much cereal for the amount of calories that I knew it was.

I'm not sure if I'm just more mindful now or if my whole perception of amounts is just super skewed but its an odd situation for me.

I've been remeasuring just about everything and even doubting some of the info on the labels. I'm always convinced that whatever I'm eating is too delish to "only" be 140 calories or whatever.

Am I crazy or is this normal?
  • I do that with yogurt. I measure out a half cup, but a half cup looks WAY too much for the calories I know it is. I know that if I measure it, it's a half cup, but my head just won't believe me. It is strange!
  • 4x seems like a lot, but it sounds like you're really making sure you don't overeat! I always hear that weighing your food is way more accurate. I haven't tried it, but I've been thinking about it.

I feel like that too sometimes, especially if I"m eating cantaloupe or something and can't believe I can eat that much for so few calories
  • I get it more for when I think I must have put loads of something in and I weigh it and it's nothing at all. I often add cereals and things to a plain yoghurt to give me something to chew on and I estimate it at about 15g then I weigh it and it's 3!
  • I would say that measuring out something four separate times is getting a bit overly compulsive. A better choice might be to ditch measuring with cups and just get a good digital scale and weigh in grams. It's more accurate and you have a black and white figure there to meet once, because who has the time to do it all over and over again, LOL!

So, I check what a portion is in grams, and in the case of steel cut oats for this AM, that is 40g. It's about the equivalent of a scant 1/3 cup.

Measuring with cups, if you are going for level cups, generally means that you are getting a few extra calories than if you weigh. That isn't always a bad thing, but it can be, if someone is stalled or not making progress.
  • I think my food scale is, by far, the single more important tool in my toolbox. More than Fitday, more than my bathroom scale, more than my measuring tape (not that I don't really, really appreciate those three things as well). A good kitchen scale takes away the uncertainty AND the mess.
  • Totally agree with needing the kitchen scale.
  • I hear you on the cereal! I did the same thing, and then of course added more to the extra milk that was left..and then darn... too much cereal so had to add extra milk and so on and so on...Now I measure the cereal AND the milk, actually I measure every single thing I eat, which is something I never did on previous diets. I always guesstimated. My son looks at me like I'm nuts when I measure out granola to add to the yogurt..LOL
I always measure a little less than the actual size, like a tblsp, I will only fill it halfway, same with everything I measure, always less.

Yeah, no kidding. A week or so ago when everything was snowy and icy on our hill and I didn't really want to drive out because of forecasts and freezing rain, my scale batteries died. I had to just do my best, but was really happy to get new ones after a few days.

Weight loss happens in the kitchen!
  • I believe in a scale. Gist ordered the Biggest loser scale from Walmart. My eyes don't know any better so the scale is what it is. Honest and that will get my weight down until I train my eye to the correct portion size. 4 x is a bt much to me.

I can see doing that if your checking for pregnancy but food, na. Lol
