Sick of living in wedgie-land

  • It doesn't seem to matter what sort of underwear I get they always turn into a wedgie. That's actually pretty dangerous for me because I have brittle skin with my collagen condition, and they easily rub right through. I've tried low ones, high ones, shorts ones, ones you could tuck into your bra, nothing seems to do the job. They are fine when I have nothing over the top, but put on some pants and they catch the edge of the underwear and rub it straight into wedgie-land. I know I generally wear them too big, but the correct size rolls down on my caesarean scar.

Shorts are the closest because they are nice and low over the, uh, cheeks, but there always seems to be far too much gusset, like if you go up from a size UK14 to a size 16 you also somehow get another inch taller. Buy an 18 and you are meant to be about 5'8. I've done home made undies before, but seriously that is a heap of work. There has to be a pair of underwear that can be worn by a short-ish, hippy lady with a scar "overhang", or do they only make underwear for flat-bellied models?
  • Try men's underwear, the plain briefs. a girlfriend of mine swears by them because they are so comfortable and leave no panty lines because of the way they are cut.
  • Hmmm...my only suggestion is to wear them tighter. I found that the moment they get too big I get wedgies. I prefer too tight over wedgies, if I have to make that choice. I also prefer satin because they slip and slide against my pants.

I know you said the scar is a problem. Is it uncomfortable? Painful?
  • Agree w/ the satin or nylon panties not rubbing against pants. I hate cotton ones for just that reason. Make sure the crotch is cotton though.

Try hi cut briefs?? These go up higher than bikinis (covers my c-section scar) but have a flattering, hi cut leg.
  • I hate wedgies and have chucked away countless malfunctioning knickers over the years, otherwise they just sit at the back of my drawer unworn and taking up space. M&S five-packs of midi briefs are not very exciting design-wise, but they don't give me a wedgie and the cotton is quite soft, and only about 6 quid per pack so worth a shot. Conversely their shorts always do, and I'm tall with a long body anyway so that didn't really help in my case.. I seem to remember some Sloggis being okay for fit too but the material isn't so soft. Again, fairly basic multipacks.
  • The scars are a big problem, and I am due some reconstructive surgery because of the look, the effect on clothing and the fact the scar tissue splits really easily. The date is meant to be January but since I've not had a date through yet it's looking like it may not be. I have a scar both above and below my tummy button and if I wear high cut briefs they roll into the smallest part of my body which is about 1.5" above the navel, if I wear them lower they roll into the bottom scar. It's like I need a bra wire up the side! I am trying to wear my underwear on the largest part of a pear shape, and the material just looks for somewhere small to skate into. The lower scar is below the pubic line, the upper one is so high the material that's meant to cover your backside it just straight up in a V shape.

Might give it a try to some synthetics, I've always worn cotton, and can always add some of that non-skid tape to the inside to stop my pants rubbing them off. Shame you have to get out of your underwear several times a day or I'd just tape them on with fashion tape!

Amber, I have been tempted by men's, my husband's briefs look a great shape, there is much more material in the buttocks than there is in the ladies' shape, if you hold them up after the laundry the back is still shaped like buttocks, mine are flat. Sadly his also have a seam right up the front, but will have a search around. I probably wear them too big too, I just find it challenging to think that something is digging in my fleshy parts and creating a bulge above and below, so I let them lay over the top of my wobbly bits, but they are too big. Smaller doesn't help, though, smaller rolls up or down. Perhaps I should try bloomers!

Edited to add: Well here we go, here's everything that's wrong with ladies' underwear, this was a very common model shot from a specialist lingerie site, this is actually the designed and desired cut of their panties! Of course the models can stand mostly still and have the edges stuck down if required, and will adjust their wedgie if required (and often have a nude thong on underneath if it's expensive undies as they will have to give them back) but seriously, this is what they are thinking a real woman can move about in???!! Is it just me that's looking for my underwear to reach the line at the very bottom of the buttocks? You know, the crease line? I don't have a magic bum which is going to suspend a line across it like that, that's a wedgie in training right there.

  • What about men's bike-short style underwear? You can also find women's foundations that are similar in style (form fitted, cut to mid-thigh or about the knee)? That way you won't have to worry about them riding up OR showing underneath your clothes.

Spanx also makes some real undergarments for women's curves. Here are some links that may help. Good luck!

  • Go Commando!

There is no law says you have to wear them. You'd be surprised how many people don't.
  • I started wearing men's tighty whities and they are the most comfortable underwear I've ever worn. They stay right where they're supposed to. I haven't had a single wedgie while wearing them.

Each to their own, but that is 110% not for me, ugh! I wear my underwear 23 hours a day (different ones, LOL!) I wear them in bed, they come off for a bath or shower and they are replaced with fresh ones the very second I am dry.

I think men's is going to be the way to go, at least until post-op, I have pilfered two different sorts from my husband's laundry and they are much better, though might have to do a little restructuring at the front! I will try the shorts tomorrow, but I've been let down by shorts before, I find that all the material rolls up into my groin so I'm basically wearing a pair of shorts as a hipster thong, with all the spare material wrapped around in rolls. I think some of the more stylish men's hipster shorts might well be my new undies of choice. Wonder why they design men's to cover up their buttocks and women's to have a line through the middle so their backside is still hanging out?!
